Make sure you're using the original ipod cable that came with it. Try not to use a usb cable on a firewire device (older, larger drive ipods are usually firewire).
Have you used iTunes to update your ipod's firmware? If you can see your ipod in iTunes then you can click on it and update it.

I discovered on amazon.com that you can reset the ipod without deleting the files. The 4G ipod is notorious for locking up:

(3) Memorize how to reset the iPod (plug it into power, push the hold button on and off, then hold down the "menu" and "play/pause" buttons at the same time for 6 to 10 seconds - repeat as needed). iPods are real nice, but every model still locks up every once in a while (less than once a month in my experience). When I first had an iPod, I took it on a trip, and it locked up so I couldn't use it and I didn't know how to reset it. Very frustrating - don't let it happen to you.
If this doesn't fix it, repair permissions on your G4 emac and try iTunes again.

And more troubleshooting here:

But I think simply doing the reset procedure in the above post will do the trick.

So only certain tunes won't play or all tunes won't play from your ipod through itunes?

Play those bad tunes through quicktime (find them in your iTunes music folder) and I think you'll see it's not your ipod but the tunes that are at fault.
Contact apple itunes music support and have them let you redownload the tracks.

Give them a shot -- their email service is actually pretty responsive. Worse comes to worse and you cancel the credit card charge and try to buy the songs again (you DID use a credit card I hope?)
