When I try to rip a music CD my itunes quits itself without user action. It will copy one file on average and start on another before shutting down. I tried to uninstall it and reinstall, but it didn't fix the problem. Is this maybe an OS problem or a bug in the new version of Itunes?
I'm running Mac OS X 10.4.11
Itunes 7.6.2 (9)

Tpicciri, Thanks for using Mac OSX .com
My name's Max, and I'd be happy to assist you. The most recent version of iTunes is 7.6.4 (9) for Macintosh, and I'd highly recommend upgrading to it. Just use apple software update, and let it do it's thing during the upgrade process. Have you tried burning CD's from Mac OS X itself, and not itunes? If not, I'd try doing that to ensure that it's not a problem with your CD burner. If that doesn't work, can I suggest making a visit to your apple store? I had a mac pro that wouldn't burn disks from iTunes at all. It turned out to be a hardware issue, not a software issue. It took the fellow at the genius bar about 10 minutes to fix it, and then I could burn disks again. I appreciate you clarifying your request.
Sincerely,
-Max

Well the thing is, it is ripping that I'm having trouble with and not burning. I do use Mac OS X for burning, but it does not have a ripping feature so I'm forced to use Apples product.
Could hardware be the issue with ripping as well?
I noticed that when it is actually playing a song from the CD that it does better and does not force quit itself as much than without a track playing. This may be nit picking at best though.
Thank you for the quick response.

Tpicciri,
I believe that a disk laser-lens smudge could be your issue. Once and a while small smudges can get onto the lens of your laser-assembly that reads disks. Unfortunately, only an apple technician can fix this without voiding your warranty. Once again, I'd highly recommend upgrading to the latest itunes (7.6.4) and try it then before escalating to contacting apple.
I hope this helps!

I apologize, I put down the wrong version of iTunes. I am up to date with the program itself. Funny thing is on the older version it worked fine for ripping.

Tpicciri,
Thank you for clarifying. You're just trying to take music off of disks and putting them on your computer, correct? I can't think of another reason it would fail unless the disk drive is failing. Unfortunately, this is something that you'd have to visit apple for. But it should be covered under warranty. I'm sorry there isn't a software solution to this problem, at least not one that I'm aware of. I'll re-open the ticket for the tech pool, but as far as I know, this is a hardware issue.
Sincerely,
-Max
