2/20/2007 For the last two days, while downloading CDs, iTunes has quit several times. I am running version 7.0.2. Sometimes the window asks if I want to reopen it, and sometimes it asks me if I want to report a problem, which I have whenever that window opened. Sometimes it will stall on a particular track and I have to Force Quit the application. I haven't done any real troubleshooting other than running Disk Warrior. I did open Preferences in my Home Library, move the iTunes .plists to the desktop and restarted the computer, but when those .plists were not rebuilt in the Preferences I put the old ones back from the desktop. I went to Disk Utility and selected the hard drive for repair but the repair button was not available, making me think the hard drive did not need repairing. I never had this problem before and don't really know how to rebuild an application like iTunes. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

What do you mean the preference files weren't rebuilt? Had you opened iTunes yet before you checked? There is no default preference file created by OS X for a particular application. This default is contained in the application, so you have to open the app first. And, naturally, you'd have to set all of your preferences after having removed the file.
Repair Disk is not available because you cannot repair the startup disk. Same way you can't rebuild the startup disk's directory with Disk Warrior. I suggest Repairing Disk Permissions with Disk Utility. If you want to try repairing the disk, you need to restart with your OS X Install Disc (by holding C when starting up with the disc inserted) or I can walk you through doing so otherwise.
You might also simply want to reinstall QuickTime and iTunes and see if that fixes your issue. You can download the latest version of QuickTime from
Apple.

When I said the preference files were not rebuilt I was referring to the fact that in the past I have had problems with the helpviewer and an Apple tech had me go to the home library preferences and put the helpviewer .plist on the desktop and restart the computer. The helpviewer file reappeared in the preference file and I trashed the old one on the desktop. I guess I was hoping the same would be true with the iTunes .plist files. I will try to Repair Disk Permissions or reinstall the applications if the problem persists. Thanks for your prompt response.

Perhaps some aspect of the Help system loads at startup, which would cause the preference file to be recreated by login, before actually opening Help Viewer. In general, though, no preference file is created until its associated application is opened. (That's why you have not more than a dozen preference files in the Library of a new user account.)
