I download from Apple Updates has been trying to download to my MacBook Pro for many months and it fails every time.
It is: J2SE 5.0 Release 4
I haven't needed it so I have just kept accepting the notification that something went wrong every time. Now I do need it and am wondering what to do to "prepare the way" so that it will download and install properly.
Thanks,
Jim Bevan

I did the download and started the install. Got passed all the permissiona and agreement stuff, passed the disk to intall it to, the install begins the blue bar starts moving across...it gets to be about a 1/2" long then quits with a sign that says "There were errors installing the software, try again." I try again and end up in the same place every time.
This is not unlike the response from the auto-update installer that precipitated this question in the first place.
Thanks,
Jim

(1)
(1.a) Could you try to repair permissions
(must be admin)
Launch Applications/Utilities/DiskUtility
On the left pane, select the drive
On the right, select the First Aid (or SOS) tab
Then click on repair permissions and let run; don not worry about messages like " new permissions...."
Quit DiskUtility
Shutdown and reboot
(1.b) could also download Macjanitor
http://personalpages.tds.net/~brian_...acjanitor.html
and use it to run the maintenance scripts
The maintenance scripts are Unix scripts which are automatically ran on your
Mac between 02Am and 04 am..if your Mac is on at this moment.
I can advice you to run, through Macjanitor, the daily script each day, the week script each week, ..and so on
(2) -> try the java install
(3) If this still hangs, could you try to download, from Apple website, the COMBO update corresponding to your running OS and install this combo OVER you're existing running OS.
Then, after the installation reboot, replay the maintenance of point (1) above and do the java install again

OK, well that was interesting.
I got over 100 pages of permission repairs (which I don't understand). The computer is running perfectly except for the Java thing. And it has not changed hands (accounts haven't changed) since I started it up....single-owner computer.
Anyhow, I did that AND I ran Mac Janitor (but my MacBook Pro is usually on all night).
I tried the installation of Java again, got to about 40% and crashed as before.
Mysterious, what?

Do you try to install the COMBO ?

I apologize. I overlooked that part of your instructions. I can't download 215Mb here at work, so I'll take care of it on my DSL when I get home. I'll reply again tonight on the outcome.
Thanks,
Jim Bevan

Well, I'm in deep trouble now !!
I downloaded the COMBO file for 10.4.7 Intel and ran it. It, also, did not complete the install. I ran repair permissions. It repaired one file. I rebooted -- because the COMBO said to try again. When I rebooted, the computer would not reboot. It gets stuck at the Mac OSX startup. The blue bar never appears.
I got out my restore discs and ran the "D" option.
It says there is a hardware error:
4SNS/1/40000000
I ran it again with the extended test.....same result.
Now what?

Well, now, it is clear that the Java install was only the visible face of the iceberg: you have a hardware problem, either on the mainboard or on the hard drive itself.
Apparently, the system lost communication with the hard drive.
Your Pro is still under warranty: call Applecare and give them the error code AHT displays. And explain them that each time you try to install a package (Java, Combo, ..) it hangs in the middle of the process.

Thank you for your time. I will close this ticket.
PS: the mystery is that the computer accepted all other updates for the past six months except the Java. I am trying to restore the Op Sys as we speak so that I can at least get an up to date backup (I hope) before turning it over to Apple.

If you have the courage and the time.. I will reinstall from scracth -so an Erase&Install- the OS from the Install/Restore DVD that came with your MBP (I think that on Apple website, there is a detailled procedure for doing this); then jump to the latest 10.4.7 through the COMBO; then update JAVA
And if it works, then re-install my 3rd-party stuff
But, of course, before backup all the important documents, iTunesLibrary,...
I still think that the hardware error is the sign of a problem and that AppleCare is there for solving it
