I am having problems with Safari and Preview on Panther. Both programs fail when I try to open them. I have done an Archive and Install to try and reset the Java system, but the problem remains. How can I reinstall Jave to make both Preview and Safari work again?

Why do you suspect Java? I don't think either Safari or Preview is a Java app.
What are the symptoms you describe as "fail when i try to open them"?
Are there messages printed into the system or console logs during these failures? (Use /Applications/Utilities/Console to see)
I will reopen this, after posting these questions, so that more techs get a chance to see your traces.

Thanks for the response. The message I got in both cases was 'Safari/Preview quit unexpectedly' along with the offer to send info to Apple. I checked the logs after I read your message and found way too much info, but the messages that stand out are EXC_BAD_ACCESS and KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS.
I thought Java might be to blame after being led off in that direction by the Apple support section. After some more investigation, I found that Safari and Preview were failing for different reasons. Preview because of a corrupted pdf file. Safari for some unknown reason. I got Safari going again, by ditching the prefs after an upgrade to 10.3.9 didn't change things. I ditched the Preview prefs and found that Preview was fine on all other pdfs. I am not impressed that Preview blew up with the corrupted file whereas Adobe Reader merely stated the file was corrupt. I tried the corrupted pdf on a Windows laptop with Adobe Reader and it failed the same way as with the Mac version.
