KNOWLEDGE LEVEL: Intermediate

PROBLEM: Combination
COMPUTER TYPE: vision
MODEL:
RAM: 32meg
OS VERSION: Windows 98
SERVICE PACK: up to date

DESCRIPTION:

I have a Visions computer with a Pentium 120 cpu, two harddrives (C: has my programs and is 3 gb; and D: has files and is 1 gb), and 32 megs of RAM.

Recently, I have been experiencing crash after crash. Originally it seemed to occur when I left too many programs open or was working on a particularly large graphic file. Now it seems to happen even when I only have a browser or word processor open

ScanDisk from a DOS prompt revealed a number of bad clusters at the end of my D drive and I expected that was going to fix the problem

However, I then got a HIMEM.SYS warning that my XMS memory was going. I pulled all four chips and had them tested. The tester showed they were good, even on the extensive setting.

Any ideas what I can do? Occassionally it allows me to boot normally, but more often it forces me into a SafeMode or even DOS only boot....

Greetings, Bob, from another Bob:

A few Qs:

1. Have you defragged the C: drive recently?
2. Did you record the text of the crash error messages? That always helps in debugging these anomalies.
3. Did ScanDisk give the C: drive a clean bill of health?

I'll be awaiting your reply. God bless!
