TICKET ARCHIVE -> Kernal Panic During Installation of Os 10.4

Hello

Lately I've had some troubles with OS 10.3 running on a G4 Quicksilver Dual 867 MHz with 1 GB of RAM. The system will crash at time - displaying a lovely gray box in several languages, saying that I should power off the system because of an error. This often happens when I try to logoff or sleep or sometime it just won't wake from sleep. All I can do at these times is hold down the power button until the box powers down. It usually starts okafter this.

So I bought OS 10.4. Before installing, I thought I would clean try rebuilding the directories using the new Disk Warrior product. This seemed to go OK. However, when installing the OS, the install cycle never completes - I get the not so lovely now, gray box and a poweroff error message. I've tried this several times, the last attempt left the OS corrupted (a kernal panic on boot) and I had to re-install the 10.3.2 OS from disk.

Any help is most appreciated.

Since the kernal panics started before you considered an OS upgrade, I would say that you have a possible hardware problem. Are they still happening even though you did the reinstall of 10.3.2? The reason I ask is that a reinstall should have fixed any possible problems with the OS files on the hard drive, and locked out any bad areas on the hard drive. Disk Warrior can fix scrambled directories but it can't fix corrupted files.

If you are still having the kernal panics, check to make sure that all cables are connected properly and that any cards are firmly seated in their slots. Also, and this is most important, make sure that all the ram modules are firmly seated.

The most frequent source of kernal panics hardware wise is a bad ram chip. The second most frequent hardware cause is a logic board problem. You should try to find an Apple hardware test disk. You nay have gotten one with your Mac. Or someone else probably has one that you could borrow. If the hardware test doesn't identify any hardware problems, and you still get the kernal panics, then it's time to have your Mac checked by a technician, or one of the geniuses at an Apple store.

I appreciate your insights and help with this - and your suggestions have gotten me much further through the installation process.

I reseated the RAM and then ran the hardware test via the Apple hardware disk - all came out clean (logic board, RAM, storage, and video memory.) After running the disk utility from the OS 10.4 DVD and verify the installation volume, I was able to get through a good portion of the installation process - through the install of the BSD system and into an "Installing Additional Essentials" section.

The installer then cuts out to a screen that says "Because of a problem installing Mac OS X could not be completed" and offers the option to save an installation log (which I did.) It advises to restart and try again, though after several tries I have given that up.

I will google the error message and see what else I can discover, but I would welcome any insights you might have.

Thanks again

I'll send this back to the Open Pool. There may just be something about this particular model which someone else might know.

Michael

After a look around the Apple support site again, I found a reference that suggested to remove all but the minimum RAM and try installing again.

This worked. After a successful OS 10.4 install this morning, I re-installed the RAM and all looks well.

I truly appreciate your help and the support of the forum.

Let me know if I can do anything for you.
