TICKET ARCHIVE -> Kernel Panic/fuzzy Screen After Sleep

My Mac OS X (version 10.2.6) gets a fuzzy (whats seems like thousands of horizontal lines cover the screen) after I active it from sleep. Once, after sleep, the screen was fuzzy, and there was a kernel panic message. Occasionally, even after my computer hasn't been 'sleeping' there will be some of those horizontal 'lines' that appear on my desktop. What should I do? I'm a total novice when it comes to computers, so I'm clueless; any help would be more than appreciated.

Hello Ana,

Could you provide more information about your system? It might be helpful in diagnosing your problem. However, there are some standard troubleshooting tips which I can suggest.

1. Install latest free OS X update. The latest version of 10.2.x is 10.2.8. You can download that and give it a try. It's fairly large so if you do not have broadband, you may have to try and obtain it through some other means.

2. Repair permissions. Run the application called Disk Utilities. Then select the your startup drive. Click Repair Permssions. Let it run.

3. If reparing permissions doesn't work, try repairing the disk. To do this you will need to boot up the Mac with the Mac OS X install disk. There should be an option in the menus to run Disk Utilities. Select your startup drive and click Repair Disk. If it fixes anything, run it again. Continue to run it until it no longer reports errors. If the same error continues to pop up, then you may require a new system installation.

4. If 1 and 2 do not work, try what is called Zapping the PRAM. To do this boot or restart your Mac and immediately hold down this keyboard combination (command-option-p-r) until you hear the boot chime sound 2 or 3 times, then let go.

5. If those do not work then you may need to reinstall the system. You can use an install option called "Archive and Install." This will allow you to essentially install a new version of Mac OS X but keep your old preferences and many of your 3rd party applications.

There's also the possibility that a piece of hardware has gone bad, possibly the RAM or the video card. If it's the RAM, you can buy new RAM. If it's the video card, the whole logicboard would have to be replaced (expensive!).

Hopefully, one of the software solutions will fix your problem.
