is there a way of getting rid of a kernel problem without doing a clean install and losing all my stuff?
Cheryl - Jul 3, 2007 - 8:19 am
Joan,
Are you experiencing kernel crashes? It could be caused by a device that OS X does not like. Unplug all your devices except the keyboard and mouse. Now start up the computer.
If you still get the kernel crash, did you install new memory sticks in the computer? If so, take them out (replace them with the old) and give it a try.
OS X is very sensitive to ram that is below Apple's standard.
Let me know if this helps.

no i haven't installed anything new. i read somewhere that it could have something to do with missing folders. i was going to buy tech tool pro. i don't know if it will help but i have to try something. thanks for you help

Joan,
You had closed the ticket, but I feel that you do not have the problem resolved.
If you had trashed a file or a folder from the Hard Drive>System or Hard Drive>Library, then that missing file/folder will cause a kernel panic. You should not mess with those folders unless you know exactly what you are doing.
When did the kernel crashes begin? Can you remember what you did or installed software wise that might have started this?

the only thing that i remember putting in would be yahoo messenger. but i noticed that i lost my sherlock and safari browser around that time. i had earthlink for my server with dial up. i recently got dsl from att and my sherlock and safari browser started working again. i don't know if that had anything to do with it but it was strange. i also lost internet explorer and that hasn't returned, i did trash some stuff from earthlink ( total access)because it was giving me some problems and i am going to call earthlink and stop them from running anything on my computer. anyway thanks for your help. joan

Joan,
You probably still have a few files from Total Access and/or Earthlink. You do not need any of the ISP programs to get on the internet dial up or DSL.
Calling Earthlink will not do anything and just create laughs from their techs.
First, since Spotlight is now working, use it to search for Earthlink and Total Access. Open a new finder window to locate those files and trash them.
Once you have all the files gone, you will need to restart the computer so you can empty the trash.
Internet Explorer was probably with the Total Access package. If you prefer that I do have the installer in my Public Folder on my idisk. Microsoft has pulled that download and is no longer supporting it.
The kernel panics could indeed be caused by the partial Total Access package on your machine and still trying to work.
If you use Mail for your email, Open it, then go to Mail menu>Preferences>Accounts and delete the earthlink account. This will totally erase any emails associated with that account, so make sure you save those important emails as text.
Now go to the System Preference>Network. In the Show box select Internal Modem. Now click on Proxies and uncheck the Web Proxy (HTTP) check-box.
Now in the Show Menu select Built in Ethernet and do the same, making sure Web Proxy is unchecked.
You should be working smoothly now.

Hi, ok I did it all and crossed my fingers and hope it all works. didn't realize that I had so much of earthlink left on my computer. thanks a lot, I have to call earthlink to close my account so I won't get billed any more. I didn't expect them to help in any way. I'll let you know if this worked. Thanks again. Joan

Joan,
Work with your computer for the next day and keep me posted. I want to make sure you do not get anymore kernel panics.

hi, I worked with my computer turning it on and off and so far, so good. It looks like you solved it. I also searched every where I could think of to eliminate anything to do with earthlink and total access. Thanks so much. I also worked on getting my Internet Explorer back. I turned off the proxies and it came back on. I can't figure that one out because I never touched any proxies when I was with Earthlink and that is when I lost it. Anyway thanks again. Joan

Joan,
The installer for Total Access changed the web proxy settings. You would never realize how Total Access actually takes over the system. It does this on a Windows machine as well.
I am glad you are working smoothly now.

hi cheryl, I have my kernel problem back. I put in my disk repair and it came up with the message .. Invalid volume file count should be 212998 instead of 212997 volume needs to be repaired-- 1 volume needs repairs. Would this have something to do with kernels? Thanks, Joan
Cheryl - Jul 12, 2007 - 4:21 pm
Joan,
We were experiencing trouble with our server, which kind of played havoc with our data base. I had to search for this ticket.
Yes, that could cause the kernel panics. Did you have the disk repair go ahead and repair the drive? If you are using Disk Utility from the OS X disk, it may not be able to repair it. In that case, you will need Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro CD. With the CD you can start up the computer and have that utility repair the drive.
Keep me posted.

hi, I had a hard time getting this thru. I haven't done anything yet. I have just looking thru articles on this problem to see if I find anything. I read about something called Pacifist that has a diplay kernel extension report command. It can get info on any kernel extensions that can cause problems but the article also said that it create other problems and I'm not experienced enough to understand it fully. I was thinking of calling Apple. I just know that I'll probably get someone from another country that I can't understand. Thanks for your concern. Joan
Cheryl - Jul 18, 2007 - 7:12 pm
Joan,
Since Disk Utility came up with errors that it can not repair, did you get Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro to have it repair the drive?
Do you have a back up of your hard drive? I ask because if Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro can not fix the drive, the next step is to use the OS CD and totally erase the drive, then install a fresh system. I have had to do this myself, so I can give you the step by step for this.
Using Pacifist to get inside the extensions of the system is tricky. You would also need to know what the codes mean once you do open it.
Keep me posted.

Hi, I haven't had any problems for the past few days. But I expect that I will have the same problem back. I was looking into getting Tech Pro but when I was going to order it I noticed that the requirements were mac 10.4 and my computer is mac 10.3.9.. would this make a difference in using the Tech Tool Pro. And also I was wondering if it is difficult to use. Would Disk Warrior be better? Thanks, Joan
Cheryl - Jul 23, 2007 - 9:02 am
Joan,
Disk Warrior would be your better choice as it does not require a specific system version.
http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/index.html
Once you get the disk, do not install it. Just use the disk to start up the computer and allow it to do its job.
The news that you have not had a kernel panic is a good one. Let me know if you need any further help.
