Description:
On this laptop, the left half of the keyboard will lock up completely after about 10 minutes of use. We noticed it when working in MS Word, but then got out of Word & went to WordPad and the same thing was happening.

Also, I noticed that intermittently when I was working on various programs, and returned to the desktop, and double clicked on various icons - the same window would appear, usually the "system properties" window.

I thought about a virus, but ran the virus program and found nothing - unless the damage is done already.

Have you heard of a virus that might cause this? Or does it look like some other hardware/software problem? If it is a virus, would reloading windows fix it?

Thanks.

Hi Pam!

If you ran a Virus check and it didn't find anything (provided you have the latest virus signatures) chances are that it's not virus-related.

The problem of the properties coming up when double clicking on an icon sounds like one I had, and yes re-installing Windows helped... however it may not be necessary. I recently had a user experiencing keyboard trouble on his notebook and believe it or not it turned out to be a dying battery... how old is the notebook?

Have you run Scandisk to check for and fix any possible disk errors that may be present? Scandisk is accessed from your start menu under PROGRAMS\ACCESSORIES\SYSTEM TOOLS, or by right clicking on your hard drives icon in My Computer and choosing PROPERTIES and then the TOOLS tab. It is also a good idea to run Disk Defragmenter at this time (also available from the TOOLS tab or the SYSTEM TOOLS folder)When both utilities are finished, re-boot your system and try again.

Please feel free to contact me if you have further questions!
