I had OS 10.3.9 installed (paid someone to do it) on my iMac earlier this year. Myself, my husband, my 3 teenagers use the computer, and we each have our own accounts. None of us is proficient. We mainly use it for internet access, e-mail, word processing and photos.

A couple of weeks ago, I changed the passwords on the kids' accounts (I am administrator). I have not done this before. Now, Keychain is giving us hell. I didn't even know it was there before. My immediate problem is I can no longer get my mail at mac.com. I have run Keychain Firstaid, for each account. It initially detected problems, it repaired them. It no longer detects problems.

I am confused. When I try to get e-mail, I get "Enter password for account dot mac", and "The .Mac server “mail.mac.com” rejected the password for user “barbaradawn”" when it try my password. I'm pretty sure I have the right password, because I use the same one for everything.

Any suggestions?

Hello Dawn,

My name is Carolyn and I will try to assist you.

Ok... follow this path: MacintoshHD>Users>Library>Preferences and locate both of these files:

com.apple.keychain.quickpick and com.apple.keychainaccess.plist

Drag those files to the Trash, empty the Trash. Try using Keychain Firstaid and see if this clears up the problem.

Carolyn :-)

I didn't see the files in Library>Preferences, so I did a search. I found com.apple.keychainaccess.plist, which I deleted. Didn't find com.apple.keychain.quickpick.

Ran the Keychain Firstaid, but it found no problems. Ran the repair anyway, of course nothing happened.

No luck in Mail, still wants a password.

Darn.

HI Barbara,

ok.. onward and upward :-)

Try this... open Keychain. Then after it opens at the top of your screen in the Menu click Keychain, then click Preferences. Click the "Reset My Keychain" button....

See if that helps :-)

If not, try this link: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.h...en/mh1777.html

And....
Mac OS X 10.4: Keychain Access asks for keychain "login" after changing login password
In Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, if you change your account's password using your Mac OS X Tiger Install disc, your default keychain password (which uses the same initial password as your user account) does not change. Because of this, you will be prompted to enter a keychain password each time an application requires authentication that your keychain would normally provide.

Note: This doesn't happen if you change your account password using Accounts preferences.

If you want your default keychain to be unlocked automatically when you log in, synchronize your Keychain Access and account login passwords by doing this:

Open Keychain Access (you can get to it by choosing Utilities from the Go menu in the Finder).
From the Edit menu, choose Change Password for Keychain "login."
Type the former password of the account that you are currently logged in to, then click OK.
If you entered the correct password, a new window appears; enter the original password again in the Current Password field.
In the New Password field, type the password that matches your current account password.
Re-enter the newer password in the Verify field, then click OK.
I don't remember my original (former) account password

If this is the case, you'll have to delete the keychain.

In Keycain Access, choose Keychain List from the Edit menu.
Delete the "login" keychain.
The next time you log in to the account, you can save your current password in a keychain.

Maybe something above helped.... ??

Well, Carolyn, I have 10.3.9, and you refer to 10.4. I tried the things you suggested, but the options don't seem to be the same (i.e., when I open Keychain, there isn't a Preferences in the Menu). Not having any luck.

I'm still confused.

Carolyn,

I also tried to find the Keychain "login" to delete, but don't see it listed.

Hi Barbara Dawn,

It's ok.. 10.3.9 and 10.4.x are the same using Keychain. I didn't mean to confuse you.

Barbara, have you tried this. Launch Safari, then go to:
Safari>Preferences. When the Preference window opens, click the AutoFill tab. Under the Username and Passwords, click Edit. Click Remove All.

See if that makes a difference....

Barbara...

Try reading the information at the Apple Discussion boards for Keychain. Here is the link:
http://discussions.apple.com/search....=Go&q=keychain

You might get some insight there also.

I am going to keep looking for anything that might help you.

Carolyn,

Thanks for all your suggestions. So far, nothing's working. I've seen that this is not an uncommon problem. I'd sure like to get rid of the Keychain, but guess I need to solve the problem first.

I'll keep looking.

HI Barbara Dawn,

Since you're still dealing with Keychain without success I am going to put your ticket back into the pool so that other techs can respond.

Hang in there... and have a wonderful holiday!

Thanks for spending the time helping me. It seems like something I did worked, because the Keychain messages have gone away. I don't actually know when they stopped (with five different users...), but I think they have. So, obviously, I don't know what did the trick. Sorry to be so vague, but I am one of those people that has a little bit of understanding, and just jumps around trying things until something works.

Really appreciate your efforts.
