I have an iMac 400Mhz G3. OS X 10.3.9. I have connected a LaCie Firewire CD burner. The burner is not recognized unless I disconnect the Firewire plug from the computer and reconnect it after bootup.
I am sure that this is a matter of the LaCie driver running before the Firewire connection is opened up. Is there a way I can change the order of loading drivers?
Tech level Moderate.

Doug,
Thanks for using macosx.com support. My name is Cameron.
The first thing to try is actually to update the firmware on your drive. I don't have a lacie drive, but I do know that they provide pretty good support.
Here's their support page for optical drives:
http://www.lacie.com/support/drivers/index.htm
Let me know if you need more help tracking it down and whether or not that works for you.
Good luck!

Cameron:
Thanks for your reply.
I had previously checked out LaCie's driver page with no success. LaCie tech support has been unable to help. (This has been an ongoing problem for some time.) There is no firmware update listed for Mac OS X. I downloaded and installed LaCie DiscRecording Support 1.17 without help.
The problem remains the same: A disk inserted in the drive does not mount unless the Firewire cable is unplugged and replugged. I also have a LaCie external Firewire hard drive that works flawlessly.

Doug,
I've looked around, I can't find anything else about this anywhere online. I'm not a good enough guru to be able to be able to help you with your original question, so I'm going to kick it back out to the rest of the techs to see if they have any ideas.
Good luck!

Doug,
My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you. What program are you using to burn? There are not many CD burners that the Apple OS recognizes.

Both the Finder and Toast Lite 5.2.1 react the same. The Finder simply ignores it, and Toast displays a garbage name or "no CD Recorder Found" instead of the Mitsumi CR-489ETE that appears after unplug/replug.

Doug,
The finder will not see that burner, but Toast should.
Go to Home>Library>Preferences. Go to the view menu and select by list so all the files will be in alpha order - making it easier to find files.
Now locate and trash the com.roxio.Toast.plist file.
Empty the trash and launch Toast.
I am assuming that this drive worked previously with this version of Toast. If I am wrong, then you are using the wrong version of Toast. You will need Toast Titanium 6. This is the version that is supported with OS 10.3.x
One question: Did you have this drive plugged in the firewire port when you updated to 10.3.9?

Yes, but it did the same thing previously (although it was plugged in during previous updates as well).
Should I reinstall 10.3.9 with the drive unplugged?

Cheryl, am I missing something here? Both the Finder and Toast recognize the drive and burn properly **once it is unplugged and replugged**. Doesn't that tell us that either or both apps understand that the drive exists and know how to talk to it?

Doug,
Fist, your post did not say that the finder saw the drive after a re-plug. Or I misread your response. I apologize.
Apple has posted that you need to have all firewire drives unplugged before installing the updates. This is the cause of your problems.
Reinstalling the update will not work, as you already have components of that update installed.
What is recommend is to do an archive and preserve install of the 10.3. Then install the 10.3.9 combo update. With both installs you must unplug all firewire drives.
Start up from your 10.3 Panther Install Disc 1.
Select your language. The Welcome to the Mac OS X Installer window appears.
Click Continue. The Important Information window appears.
After reading or printing the information, click Continue. The Software License Agreement window appears.
After reading or printing the information, click Continue.
An agreement sheet appears. If you agree with the license agreement, click Agree. The Select a Destination window appears.
Click the volume that you wish to install to.
Click Options. The installation options sheet appears.
Select Archive and Install.
Select the volume which already has Mac OS X installed.
You should also select Preserve Users and Network Settings, to preserve network and Home directory settings.
Click OK.
Click Continue to begin the installation.
Once you have restarted the computer, you will need to go to the utility folder and start up Disk Utility. Click on the second icon at the far left, then click on Repair Permissions. - Repair disk will be grayed out.
Now download the 10.3.9 combo update at:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...pdate1039.html
The download link is at the top right in the box.
Once that is done and you have restarted, go to Disk utility and repair permissions.
Now connect the firewire drive. Everything should be working smoothly.
