I'm having the worst time formatting my new LaCie 250GB hard drive. Twice I got a bad scriptor error and the last partition was running for about 10 hours, maybe more when I get home.

The only reason I did the formatting was because of a slip of paper from LaCie which instructed the formatting to MacOS Extended since I was going to use it primarily for backing up data on my iBook.

After the first error, my iBook couldn't read the drive. Took several reboots before it would read but required initialization which ended is a the second error. The other time, it ran forever so I thought it stalled. I forced quit and tried it again last night. I think it's still running but won't know until I get home.

Any ideas? HELP!

How are you formatting the disk? What program?

Are you on the internet with it? If so, broadband or dialup? Sounds like a stupid question I know, but I can send you an installer file containing the Apple Remote Desktop client program. This way I can remote control your Mac and see firsthand what its doing.

I'm not on the Internet when formatting. I figure it's best to just leave it alone while the formatting is running. I really don't want or feel the need to buy a program to format the drive as I would think Disk Utility would set the drive up.

I just want to get the drive formatted. Any ideas? I'm going to try a post from Apple.

Disk Utility would be a program. So you're using Disk Utility. Okay. Are you clicking on the actual drive or the partition listed under the drive? Or is there a partition listed under the drive? Are you using the "Erase" tab or the "Partition" tab?

Yeah, I went through all the different steps to format the drive. But I gave up and am returning it to the reseller for a replacement. I had noticed that the USB port behind the drive was really loose, perhaps a bad connection.
