Is it somehow possible in Mac OS 10.3.9 to share one user's Address Book entries (perhaps a specific Group) with the Address Books on other computers? I know that one way might be to use a backup utility such as Retrospect to "publish" (copy) an entire address book database to all computers, but doing so would obliterate each user's unique contacts. Can two separate Address Books be maintained (and both be accessible to Mail, etc.)?

If the answer is to synchronize to an LDAP server, can an OS X (not OS X Server) machine be designated as a local LDAP server?

We don't want to jump through too many hoops, nor change our peer-to-peer simple LAN setup significantly; we just want to share a virtual Rolodex. I can't figure out how to do this.

Have a look at Address-O-Matic (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15158)

Description from Macupdate.com:
Address-O-Matic is the first tool that lets you share your Address Book within a local network, automatically and transparently. No need to change application: you decide which groups to publish and which services to subscribe to, and in your Address Book you will find your addresses, along with the new ones. You can also edit them, and in this case you will retain them, otherwise the addresses will disappear as soon as you remove the subcription.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I have installed Address-O-Matic onto two computers, to test its functionality, and I don't think it is working quite right. One machine has its entire address book shared, and the other a specific Group is shared. Each machine can see the shared set, and lists the service as a Group within Address Book, all as expected. What is unexpected, though, is that none of the Cards within the shared Groups are visible. Moreover, when I attempt to click on the shared Group from the remote computer, Address-O-Matic appears to hang. I get the colored ball of hesitation (confined to the desktop space above the A-O-M icon itself) and no response from the program.

I tried setting up a port, since the built-in firewall is invoked on each machine, and then forcing A-O-M to use that port, but that only succeeeded in preventing the shared Groups from showing up. Do I have to do anything to the Cards within a shared group in order to make them visible? Is it working the way it should and I'm just missing something?

If I can get this to work, then it is exactly the right utility for me. I appreciate your insight.

Hi Michael,

It appears that you are doing everything correctly. it might be worth just turning the firewalls on both machines off and testing to see if that helps, if it does then you will have isolated the problem. I have had a quick scan through the user manual and everything you have mentioned seems to be okay, I can't really guess why the problems you are having have occured. It might be your best bet to contact the support on support@address-o-matic.com and explain your problem to the developers.

Hope this helps and good luck
