Having just recovered from temporarily "losong" about 10000 of my 28000 iTunes songs cuz 7.3.x could not "locate" these, I am suspicios of the latest 7.4.2 update. I am now running 7.2 without any file location problems.

Anyone have experience with reliability of the 7.4.2 in this regard?

You will have more responses if you post at the main forums site. This area is designed for one-on-one responses, and not what you are looking for. I am likely to be the only answer that you will get here, unless one of the other techs wants to add another comment.

Virtually every iTunes update also updates the iTunes library. Some users have issues after any update, others do not have any problems. I personally have not had problems with iTunes, but only about 2,500 songs in mine. Some songs originally added when iTunes first started in OS 9 maybe about 7 years ago. So, I have gone through major OS changes, as well as iTunes updates. Occasional problems with updates, but have always had a backup to use. I have not seen more problems recently, other than the occasional glitch. And I don't have problems that are generally found by others. I have one customer that I support who has a much larger library than yours. Last count was around 115,000 songs, if I recall correctly! The library updates properly (after a couple of days), and he is using the current iTunes. (he always waits a few days before updating, and the library update takes forever!)
His main problem is keeping a current backup of around 300GB! He doesn't seem to notice that large amounts of songs are lost, but only a few thousand would not be missed! A large library might leave yourself open for major glitches that might not be noticed in a relatively small library.
I can't tell you how to proceed, other than keeping a good backup of your iTunes music folder.

Dale-
Thank you for your reply re your personal experience with iT. I expect that your observations are correct. I do keep a backup of all songs (about 115GB) on a separate drive and copies of the Library and xml files in several places.

Thank you for your assistance.
Cheers,
Landolphe
