Off and on I have trouble with my Excel:mac 2004 edition when launching the application.

As it starts up it goes through "Optimizing font menu performance...." and will then tell me fonts are corrupt and should be removed. This pretty much locks me out of excel as it takes hours to click all the error messages.

I don't believe my font library is corrupt, nor should I believe Microsoft to determine this.

I had just updated the Microsoft mac:2004 software, from on line, prior to this happening. I had updated my G4 Tower and Powerbook at the same time. Excel launched fine on my tower but am having the above problem on my powerbook.

- Can you please explain what excel is doing upon start up when optimizing the font menu.

- Is this something that can be bypassed? or turned off?

- How do I ensure this doesn't happen again....important files are on my laptop and I am currently locked out of them.

Thank you.

Do you know for a fact that your font library is not corrupt, that you don't have font ID conflicts, etc.? I would try deleting your font cache using Yasu (Yet another system utility, donationware, available from versiontracker.com and macupdate.com) and reboot. If the problem goes away, you are in luck. If the problem is not resolved, there are many commercial apps which will examine your System and User fonts to determine which if any are corrupt (Font Doctor is one such app, don't know price). Mac OS X stores fonts in at least three locations, and it too difficult to sort out font conflicts and corrupt fonts without a specific utility designed for this purpose.

Finally, to answer your specific questions:

1. I do not know what Microsoft Office apps specifically do during the "font optimization" process, but I suspect it checks the fonts for corruption and prepares the WYSIWYG font menu

2. It can't be turned off.

3. Have a backup. Actually, have at least two. I do daily, weekly and monthly backups and keep the monthly backup off site in case of fire/theft/earthquakes and the like. There are shareware apps that will do this for you and Retrospect is the major commercial app used for this purpose.
