I inserted the Leopard upgrade DVD into the internal SuperDrive of my My Dual 1GHz G4 (mirrored bezel) Power Macintosh running Panther (10.3.9), launched the installer included on the DVD, clicked the restart button in the installer window and here's what happened on restart:

After the light gray screen with circular progress indicator, the screen went to a medium shade of gray with a spinning beachball cursor displayed near the upper-left corner of the screen. I waited several minutes and nothing changed. It appears the machine remains in this state for as long as one is willing to wait.

Is this normal? Does it just take forever to startup when installing?

My intention is to make an installation on an external Firewire drive, but the installer never reaches the point where one can select the target drive for installation.

Is your profile correct, and you only have 256MB of memory installed?
That will stop Leopard from installing. and you need to upgrade your memory to at least 512MB.

However, to answer your question (assuming that you do have enough memory installed), the Leopard installer can take a while to finish booting, especially on an older system such as yours. 10 minutes is not unusual. The main slowdown is the DVD drive. I would let it sit for 10 - 20 minutes. If it hasn't done anything else for 30 minutes, then it's unlikely to continue. You could try using a CD/DVD drive cleaner disk.
