KNOWLEDGE LEVEL: Intermediate

PROBLEM: Software
COMPUTER TYPE: Samsung
MODEL: Sens 500
RAM: Not related
OS VERSION: Windows 95
SERVICE PACK:

DESCRIPTION:

After replacing the HD on my notebook, the attempts to load Windows 95 disk gives me the error message:

""SU-0013
-------
To set up Windows 95, your startup drive must be an MS-DOS boot partition.
If your startup drive is an HPFS or Windows NT file system, you must create
an MS-DOS boot partition before running Setup.""

A partition for the "Hibernation" was setup using a Phenoix program called "PHDISK" which I copied from my old HD, yet I still get the same error message.
Can you help please?

Hi Fash and welcome to NoWonder.

I am assuming that when you say "attempts to load Windows 95 disk" you mean booting up the notebook with the new hard drive. The problem is that the drive that is currently in your notebook does not have a bootable partition, and therefore Windows95's loader code doesn't know where to find windows.

The only solution I see to your problem is to use the utility called FDISK to make your disk bootable. Be very careful when using this solution though, cause misusing the software could destroy the actual contents of the disk.

To use FDISK, you need to get a DOS boot disk ( you can create one with FORMAT A: /S ) and copy onto it FDISK.EXE from your dos disks.

From there, boot the notebook with the boot disk and start FDISK. Select the option 2, "Set Active Partition", and then designate the first partition of the disk as Active. Type the number of the partition to make active in the box (e.g., 1 or 2), and press ENTER.

Press ESC to return to the Main menu.
Press ESC to return to DOS.
Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to reboot the computer (for changes to take effect).

This should give you back your notebook.

If it doesn't, please contact me again and I will be glad to look into the matter some more.
