I have two computers, an old PowerMac G4 running System 9.0, and a new iMac G5 running 10.4. Both of them connect to the internet with dial-up modems. I would like to be able to connect them together for file-sharing occassionally, but not at the same time as I'm connected to the internet. I have a crossover cable connected between ethernet ports, but can't seem to configure them correctly to make the connection. Can you help? Thanks, Jerry

Hi, I'm Greg, your Volunteer Tech.
There are a couple of things to do. You will need to make ethernet and appletalk active on both computers. To make ethernet active, you need to go to Ethernet Network Prefs (and TCP/IP control panel) and set to "Configure Manually" and enter valid Local Area Network IP addresses - example, use 192.168.1.10 and 192.168.1.11 for the two computers. Then also turn on appletalk/ set the Appletalk Control Panel to use ethernet. Go to Sharing Prefs and Sharing Setup Control Panel and turn on file sharing.
Now here's the surprise: You can initiate file sharing only from the OS 9 computer. If you try from OS X 10.4, it will tell you the protocol is no longer supported.
Hope this gets you started.

Jerry,
Thanks for the feedback.
If you can't access the ethernet and file sharing at the same time, then I didn't understand your local network correctly.
Please tell me how things are connected, including if you have a router, etc.

No, I don't need to access both the other computer and the internet at the same time. It's just that, after using the local connection, I have to go back and set the TCP/IP control panel on my System 9 computer back to PPP. I was wondering if there was a way around this. Jerry

Oh, I see now.
Yes, using "Locations" is a quick way to change settings back and forth like that.
Good luck.

Okay, I will try it. Thanks for all your help. Jerry
