How do I find my Local Host Name?
macbandit - Jun 22, 2005 - 7:53 am
Hi Ronald,
if you go into System Preferences, Sharing you should see a Device Name and underneath information telling you what name others in the local network need to use eg. Steven-Dunns-Computer.local

Hi Steven,
Thanks for such a prompt reply!
The software (a cleanup type) insists on my logging in at startup and gives me the prompt:
local host:/root #
and I misread it and tried the local host name, which does not work, so the new question is how to find my root number?
Ronald.

Hi Ronald,
you shouldn't have to login using a root number, just a name that you created during the install process. I would suggest that you reset your mac, taking it back to defaults.
To do this carry out the following:
1. Press Option-Command-O-F during startup (This will take you into Open Firmware)
2. At the Command Line type the following:
reset-nvram (enter)
set-defaults (enter)
reset-all (After this command the mac will reset and restart, everything should then be in order)
You should then be able to login normally

Stephen,
unfortunately, normal log-in seems to be taken over by the Cocktail software (
http://www.macosxcocktail.com ) and so a normal start-up interrupt seems to be pre-empted by Cocktail, or so it seems to me! I can still start up OK by exiting at the local host/root # prompt
during the Cocktail initial checks. I can live with typing Exit every start-up, or I could uninstall Cocktail, but I would rather not...

Hi Ronald,
I'm afraid I don't know much about this software,I remember using it once, didn't like it so I got rid of it. I had a look at the link you sent me and one of the features is to change the startup mode. I looked into the blogs and forum but there doesn't seem to anything documented about your problem. I would suggest that you look into the help section that comes with the software.
Sorry I cannot be of anymore help, if it was me I would de-install the software, there is plenty of other software that does the same as cocktail, maintenance etc. eg. Onyx, System Optimiser X, without taking control of the system.
