I can't remove extensis suitcase from the login items list and it is driving me up the wall.
I do graphics and my wife is a no-frills 'low-power' user. So, I have my user set up to start suitcase on login and her user does not.
She was recently having font problems on her email client. So, I put extensis in her start up items hoping that managing her system fonts with suitcase would help. But, that didn't fix it. So, I repaired permisions from the Tiger install disk and that did fix it.
Wanting to remove the system load of extra login items, I went back to remove extensis from her user's login items. But, you can't do it (extensis is evil). You highlight extensis suitcase in the list, click the "-" and nothing happens -- well, the item above suitcase becomes highlighted but suitcase is still there.
I tried to remove it from my user also, but the same thing happens.
I found a thread in this Q/A where someone had the same problem. They in fact completely removed suitcase from their machine and STILL couldn't remove the login item.
The thread seems to have petered out with no satisfactory conclusion having been reached.
What to do??
thanks in advance.

Hello,
First, did you delete the Suitcase files?
Remove the 'Extensis Suitcase X1' folder from your /Applications folder.
Remove the following two files from your /System Folder/Extensions folder:
Suitcase Bridge
Suitcase Extension
Remove the following two items from your /Users//Library/Preferences folder:
com.extensis.Suitcase.plist
Suitcase Preferences
You also want to remove any of the auto-activation plug ins.
For QuarkXPress, 'Suitcase XT' is automatically installed into the XTensions folder if a supported version (4.11, 5 or 6) is installed.
If you use Illustrator 8 or 9, the 'Suitcase Auto-Activation' plug-in is installed in Illustrator's Plug-Ins\Extensions folder.
For Illustrator 10, the 'Suitcase Auto-Activation X' plug-in is installed into Illustrator 10's Plug-Ins\Extensions folder.
If you are using InDesign 2, the 'Suitcase Auto-Activation' plug-in is installed into InDesign's Plug-Ins folder in a sub-folder named 'Extensis'.
Next, go to Hard Drive>Library>Startup Items. Look for Extensis or Suitcase there.
Restart the computer, empty the trash, now try deleting it from the startup item list.

Thanks very much for the quick response. But, I don't want to get rid of Suitcase, I just want to remove it from the list of startup items on my wife's user. Is there a less drastic solution. I'm not trying to be critical, I certainly appreciate whatever help you can give and lord knows I can't fix it myself. But, this doesn't seem to address the real problem. ie what evil is causing Extensis Suitcase to persist in my list of startup items even when I tell it to go away?
thanks,
Jason Cade

Jason,
I did a bit more research for you. I am assuming that you are the Admin account and your wife is just a user. Follow these instructions and let me know if this works.
While logged in your wife's user account:
Quit Suitcase, open your hard disk, go to /Users/[Home]/Library/Preferences and delete the com.extensis.Suitcase.plist file and the Suitcase Preferences folder.
Now go to System Preferences>Accounts>Your wife's account>Login Items and try to delete Suitcase.
Log out, then log back in. Empty the Trash and double check to see if Suitcase stayed off.

Sorry it took me a while to respond. I think that you were definately on the right track as far as preference files. I removed all of the suitcase preferences that you instructed me to remove and a couple others to no avail. However, in a move of total frustration I removed all of her preferences and let the system put her prefs back together for me.
I know that this is still sort of a hacky and probably inefficient way around the problem. But, it did get rid of suitcase.
Thanks for all your help

Jason,
I am glad you finally did get rid of the pest. I'll remember for the next problem that comes up with Suitcase to trash all the preferences.
