I have purchased one of these notebooks and wondering what kind of track record this animal has. Are their any problems I should know about other than the dvd decoder card to make the dvds playable and readable. Is this a fairly fast/stable mac or what? What OS would be best to run on this? Has a 400mhz processor upgrade actually can take a 400 Mhz Processor. Will this cause any incompatability issues trading off a 400mhz for this 333mhz processor and is their much speed difference to make the upgrade worth while? Thanx too whoever owns one and cares to share, Bitenrat/x2biten

In retrospect, the Lombard had a poor track record. I used one and it's now pretty much kaput. It ran up through Jaguar pretty well for a while and then slacked off and started crashing. During its lifetime, practically every hardware part has been replaced, but it still fails to work properly. I believe there's a possibility it could continue to run OS 9 without a hitch, but I wouldn't get my hopes up about running OS X smoothly.
Also of note, Lombard was a transitionary laptop. It contains an older logic board setup (before Apple started using the Universal Motherboard Architecture in the Pismo the following year) and was the first laptop to drop ADB and adopt USB but not also contain FireWire, as did the blue & white Yosemite desktop of the year before. So, you'll be stuck with an unpowered FireWire PC Card if you need it. Wireless PC Card, too, as there also was no AirPort slot nor available adapter.
I hope this is helpful. I would have warned against the purchase had you posted to the list before acquiring it.

Well Ben-ouch!!! on that response will let you know what transpires it has 10.3 panther OS x on it now and the guy says its a speed demon!! Also he knows a way around the unpowered firewire ports. If all else fails I have a 9.2.2 full install so it will be downgraded and sold if it gives me one moments problem. I will go with a pismo next time I would suppose. Thanks again for the info, David/Bitenrat

The only two options around the unpowered FireWire/USB 2.0 PC Card ports are to make sure you have a power supply for each FireWire/USB device or to find a PC Card that offers an optional power supply for itself.
Do you want me to close your request or reopen it for another opinion?

Thank you and please close the request as you sound quite opinionated and apparently had a terrible experience with your Lombard-maybe you just ended up with a lemon-you think? and again thank you for your opinion.

Let me just be clear. I had a fine time with my Lombard until I tried to go beyond Jaguar. Then, a combination of age and something else seemed to cause problems to start happening. I encourage you to read up on others' problems at macfixitforums.com and xlr8yourmac.com. Those are places I found out about many other Lombard users' lemons.

I suppose I can't honestly say that all Lombards were lemons, but as one who has spent many hours daily reading Mac sites over the years, I thought I could justify my opinion. I'm sorry you were unhappy with my service. I remind you that I offered to reopen your question for other opinions. I'm going to do that now as perhaps someone else has a different experience to share.

Hi there,
Ben has answered your original questions, "Are their any problems I should know about other than the dvd decoder card to make the dvds playable and readable. Is this a fairly fast/stable mac or what?" etc...
Unfortunately from his experiences, which is what you were asking for, he apparently did not have a good one with the Lombard. I am sorry that this information is probably not what you want to hear after already acquiring the laptop. He did recommend you view other user information on two separate websites for other user opinions and that is what I am going to recommend you do as well.
Thank you for using our service and hopefully we will be of better help to you next time!
