When I startup my iMac G4 (OS 10.3.9) I get the apple sign and then a blank, blue screen for about 15 minutes before I can log in. After the computer is up, everything seems ok.

So far I have run Disk Utility several times in order to repair the disk and fix the permissions. I have also used other programs, such as Applejack, OnyX etc. to perform the same tasks. It seems that the disk is ok. However, the programs seem to repair the same permissions over and over. I also run
fsck –y (I’ve read about this in the forum), but the startup time is still very long.

Do I need to buy Disk Warrior to fix my problem, or is there any other way?

I would appreciate your help. Thank you.

Stephan,

Do you have a lot of fonts loaded on your machine? I have seen this cause a BIG problem.

You could move the fonts to another folder and then try re-staring the machine to see if this is the case. Here is an address for font documentation from Apple:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25710

Even if you turn off the fonts with Font Book, they will slow the boot time. I've had good success with creating a 'Disabled Font' folder and keeping the fonts in there that I use, and the move them in and out as necessary.

You may also want to examine some sort of font management software.

Hope this helps,
Arron

Arron,

Thanks for your advice. I did what you suggested, however, it didn't solve the problem. It's still taking 10-15 minutes before I get to the log in.
