I recently upgraded from OS9 to OSX and can no longer retrieve all my old emails which were on outlook express 5.02. Whn I go into Applications OS9 which is on my hard disk and click on outlook express it says 'classic cannot find a mac OS9 system folder or the start up disc to use'.
This is the list of headings that comes up when I open up OS9 Applications:
Applications (Mac OS 9)
Web Pages
Internet Utilities
Internet Explorer 5.1
Internet
Apple Browser Launcher
About Internet Access
Internet
Web Pages
Internet Utilities
Internet Explorer 5.1.5
Internet Applications
About Internet Access
Outlook Express 5.02
Microsoft Internet Self-Repair
Internet Explorer 5.1.5.smi
Internet Explorer 4.01 Folder
A friend did all the upgrading for me and I'm not terribly computer literate so any repsonses in plain english gratefully received !
Thanks

Clare,
It looks like your friend left you all the internet programs on the drive, but in order to run those OS 9 programs, you need OS 9 System Folder on the drive.
Click twice on the hard drive icon and take a look at the folders. With OS X you should have System Folder with a 9 on the folder and System folder with an X on the folder along with the Applications folders (one with Mac OS 9 in the name) along with Library, Users and a few other folders.
Do you have System Folder with a 9 on the folder icon?

Clare,
System Folder is the OS 9 folder and System is the OS X.
Open the System Folder and double check the folders with system in the name.
You should have:
System - the icon looks like a suitcase
System Extensions (disabled)- a plain folder
System Resources - looks like a document icon.
From your list it looks like you have another System Folder. This could be the problem. Drag that to the trash.
Restart the computer. Now look at your hard drive. Does System Folder have a 9 on the folder icon?

Hi Cheryl, thank you for your patience:
System Folder does have the icons you describe, including one above the suitcase called STF.
There is another file System - which lies above System Folder. a) When I open System it has a Library folder in it - list below. b) The core services file in that has an X on it when it is shown as an icon.c) when I drag it into the trash as you advised it asked me for a password - is that the right one to drag and how what would have happened previously for me to know what that passwrod was?
Apologies for dumbness and also just anxious not to disempower whole thing as livlihood depends on being able to access emails and docs just at mo !
Thanks so much - here is what is in the Library Folder:

Clare,
That System folder with Library in it is for OS X. the password it is asking for is your user password that you created when you first started OS X.
If that folder that you tried to drag to the trash is still in the trash, drag it out.
That is what runs OS X.
here is what you should have on your hard drive when you click twice on it:
Applications
Applications (Mac OS 9)
Desktop (Mac OS 9)
Documents
ISP
LEC
Library
Master
System (this is OS X system)
System Folder (this is OS 9 system)

I am assuming that you are running the computer right now in OS X. You have a dock at the side or bottom of your screen. In the dock is an icon with a light switch and apple next to it. Click on that.
Now click on the Classic icon. Once that loads, does it show you a System Folder to select to run Classic (which is really OS 9)?

Clare,
I am a bit confused. The last list of icons you gave, where are they - in the Dock or in System Preferences?

Just anoher thought. The machine I am working on now is one of the orignal imacs bought about 6 yrs ago. OSX software I bought for my new IMAC a year or so ago which is one of the white ones on top of an upturned pudding basin ? My friend who loaded this old machine with the OSX had to get some intermediary software to enable it to take OSX ? Would that be part of problem ? Although it translated all my word files from OS 9 aboslutely fine no problem - it is only emails that have got Stuck !
Sorry for endless responses and thanks for your patience.

Clare,
The software that your friend had to install was probably a firmware update, along with updating OS 9. You do have all the correct folders on your hard drive.
Go to System Preferences>Startup Disk. When that opens, do you see two options - Mac OS X and Mac OS 9?
Rather than trying to open Outlook, have you set up Mail in OS X. You can import those emails to Mail.
Open Mail and choose File > Import Mailboxes. Select the mail application from which you want to import your old messages. Follow the onscreen instructions.
What OS version did you install?

Hello Cheryl - I've been away - thank you for the reminders and for your latest suggestion. I did what you said and the start up disk shows OSX 10.3 and OSZ1 9.0
I then followed your instructions but the following message came up:
Classic cannot find a mac OS9 system folder on the start up disk to use. You may need to install Mac OS9.1 or later.
Look forward to your next thoughts !
Thanks so much
Clare

Clare,
What version of OS 9 do you have installed? It needs to be OS 9.2.2 for Classic to register in OS X.
Can you start up with OS 9?
Go to System Preferences. Does it show a Classic pane? If yes, click on it. See if you can start classic from there.
I am assuming that you have OS 9 installed on the same drive as OS X.
