I was having some minor problems, so, following advice from Mac support (Apple Canada Inc.), I reinstalled my system (10.3.9) and my applications. Unfortunately, all my Entourage folders have disappeared. I created a backup before erasing and reinstalling, but have no idea how to find or import all my existing emails, addresses, calendar entries, etc. from the dmg file.
Help!

Hello,
Have you double clicked the .dmg file to open it yet?

Hi, Caroline,
Yes, I opened the .dmg file, and did Find for anything with entourage in its name. I found quite a few things, but not any lists or archives or databases, or whatever that could be my thousands of emails, hundreds of addresses, or months of Agenda data. What I hope to find out is: how does entourage store this stuff, and what does it call the files, and how do I bring them from the backup into the reach of my active Entourage. I have no idea.

HI Mark,
Can you burn that .dmg file to a CD? Did you use Disk Utility to create the .dmg file to start with? Do you have Entourage software on your Mac now? Without the software on your hard drive, you haven't the proper format to open those files on the .dmg. I would try burning a CD from that .dmg using Disk Utility. Here's how to do that:
Disk Utility Help
Index
Creating a disk image
You can use Disk Utility to create a disk image of a disk, volume, or folder. You can use disk images to move files from one computer to another or to send to other people in email messages.
You can also use a disk image to burn a CD or DVD disc to send to other people or to back up the contents of your disk so that you can restore it if something happens to your information.
When you create a disk image you choose the format of the image:
If you want to continue adding files to the disk image after it's created, choose read/write.
If you don't need to add more files to the disk image, choose read-only.
If you don't need to add more files to the image and you want to conserve space, choose compressed . The disk image takes up only as much space as the data on the image.
If you want to use the disk image with a third-party application, choose CD/DVD master. The disk image contains a copy of all sectors of the disk, whether they're used or not, and copies them to other CDs or DVDs bit for bit.
You can also create a blank disk image so that you can copy files to it later. See "Creating a blank disk image" for more information.
Be sure the files you want to protect are in the same folder in the Finder.
To create a disk image from a disk or volume, select it in the list of disks and volumes.
Choose File > New then the type of image you want to create.
To create a disk image from a folder, choose “Disk Image from Folder.” Select the folder you want, then click Image.
To create a disk image from a disk or volume, choose "Disk Image from disk name."
Type a name for the image and choose where you want to save the image.
Choose one of the disk formats from the Image Format pop-up menu.
To require a password to access the contents of the image, choose "AES-128 (recommended)" from the Encryption pop-up menu.
Click Save.
If you chose to use a password, enter it in the dialog that appears.
The name of the disk image is followed by the filename extension ".dmg."
You need Entourage software to read your files that were created with it such as e-mail. You said you have "active" Entourage, I take that to mean you reinstalled it?
Hang in there ...

HI, Caroline,
Sorry about my slow response time: I've been away from my office a lot lately.
I have reinstalled Entourage from its original disks, and it runs fine. But I don't have any of my emai boxes, my addresses, or my calendar entries.
I'm not sure why you mention burning the .dmg to a DVD; I have it on an external hard drive, and I have it, expanded, on my internal harddrive, where it takes up about 34 Gb. I don't have any problem accessing anything that is in the .dmg, as long as I know what it's called.
For example, when I realized that I didn't have my photo archives, I went to the (expanded) disk image, to Users, to Mark, to Library, to Pictures, to iPhoto, etc. and dragged them to the equivalent space on my HD. Bingo! Problem solved.
Now I want to do the same thing with all my Entourage files. I can't find them, don't know where they are, or what they are called, or what format they are in.
The ideal answer I am looking for would be something like "Entourage saves all this stuff as .xyz files, in a folder called ENT123, in your Utilities folder" To move them, you just need to....
As I said, I am sure that I have these files; they are in the dmg file on my external, and in the expanded version of it that's on my internal. I just need to know how to access them.
I'm hoping you can help me do that. Thanks very much, and have a great weekend.
Mark

Caroline,
I have followed HTH's suggestion and hey, I'm back in business. Thank you both very much.
