Hello MacOSX support member.
New to Mac and Leopard, I think that by cleaning my dock (call it playing around..) I suspect to have knocked out Garageband, iPhoto and maybe more.. Garageband is not a priority for me but now being "ready" for iPhoto; how to get it back? I think what happened is that I dragged the icons into the trash. When that means that I UNINSTALLED them, well we have the problem right there. When doing a search in Spotlight nothing comes up. So the programs are definitely gone...
Thanks
Jan

Welcome to Macosx.com Jan!
I recomend doing an archive and install. This will keep all of your personal data intact (ie: photos, music, documents, etc.) while removing all system files (the operating system, operating system software). This will also reinstall the iLife applications. This should fix the problem. I recommend also doing a backup of your files (to a cd or external hard drive) in the unlikely event something goes wrong during the archive and install.
If you need any more details or clarifications, let me know.
Thanks for visiting the site,
Leonard Slutsky

Hi Leonard,
Thanks for the help. Just a follow up question as I met with my girlfriend over the weekend who is a long time Apple Powerbook user. She was surprised one could UNinstalls programs by dropping the icons from the dock into the trash. Coming from Windows I was not expecting this to happen without a single warning. So do I uninstall the actual program when dragging and dropping the icon from the doc into the trash? When this is the case: does this not happen a lot accidentally??
Thanks,
Jan

Hello MacOSX support team,
Just to reopen this ticket as I did not get an answer to my last questions and more questions have now emerged as well... First of all please confirm that I actually DO uninstall a program when dragging and dropping an icon from the dock to the trash. I did this now with my Skype program icon but the program did not get uninstalled. BUT I did loose my Garageband and iPhoto though, which icons I did drag and drop into the trash.... Second big question now as my girlfriend just freshly installed Leopard on her G4 laptop. There is no sign of iWeb, iPhoto or Garageband on her system. The programs did show on my initial install though. Is iLife part of Leopard or does it need to be purchased separately, as I always thought iLife being inclusive to OSX... But then again I did see it on my install and the girlfriend's DVD did NOT show these programs plus iWeb after the install.. Confusing what is going on here...
Thanks and Merry Christmas.

Hi there anonymous helper!
I do not see your response above here so I past it below for clarity.
Thanks for clarifying this and indeed the girlfriend is always right!!
But the one thing I am staring at here is that I could swear having that guitar icon on the dock even though my grey install DVD, that is supposed to have iLife on it, is miles away from me... I only installed Leopard, had iPhoto and Garageband on the dock, dragged them to the trash and discovered than that they were gone... BUT you say: no possible amigo... I must have been smokin' something strange that night I guess. But thanks to inform me that iLife is residing on that other DVD... I thought it to be a restore thingy for a vague use..
Thanks for the info! You guys are SOOOOO bloody convenient!
Merry Christmas
Jan and Pamela
I will verify that for you, and your girlfriend is correct (as usual!):
You won't uninstall any program simply by removing its icon from the Dock. There are no apps in the Dock, only icons which are links (similar to Windows shortcuts) to the real apps/files. All that happens is the change to the Dock. If your apps are gone from the Applications folder, then you may have accidentally moved those to the trash, then emptied the trash. In the case of iPhoto and Garageband - if you drag the app (from the Applications folder) to the trash, then empty the trash, your app will be gone (except for support files that are not stored with the app itself)
The iLife apps are _not_ part of the Leopard install. If you do and erase and install, then all you have is Leopard, and not the other bundles apps that came with your Mac. That bundle (iLife and others) can be re- installed from that original grey restore DVD.
