Knowledge Level: I'm New!

Problem: Software
Computer Type: Apple
Model: 8500
RAM: Not related
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: MacOS 8.1

Description:

I have an 8500 with a Newer g3 card in
it, but the speakers have been muted for several months. (I like quiet.)
However, yesterday, I wanted to hear some sounds and discovered I lost sound. I made sure I only had the monitor and sounds control panel - it was set to mute, but unchecking that still did no good.
I installed 7.5.2 on another drive and booted from that. Sound is
perfect.
I trashed that system folder and installed 8.0. Sound is perfect. Then
I updated that folder to 8.1 and the sound is gone. That system folder has just the apple stuff, no 3rd party.

Here are some suggestions that I tried and suggestions I have been given:
1 Replace sound and finder preferences
2 Make sure I only have the Monitor and Sound Control Panel, not the
old one
3 Make sure Mute is not checked
4 Make sure nothing is plugged into the speaker jack>5 "sacrifice a Zip disk (shouldn't be too hard) and your sound
will be restored"
6 Check SOund control panel - there isn't one in 8.1
7 Check sites such as MacFixit - though there are sound problems with
8.1
none were related to what I have
8. Check with MacHome

Mac OS 8.0 has separate sliders and mutes for Sound Out and Computer
Speaker Volume. In Mac OS 8.1 (and in QuickTime 3.0), these are replaced
by a single Computer System Volume slider and mute. In addition, the
sound input choices - Microphone, Internal CD and AV Connector - are
replaced by None, Sound In, CD, RCA In, and DAV Analog In.

Mac OS 8.1 seems to switch these behind the user's back at times, so
that you may have to reselect the appropriate input after starting an
application, or even after starting recording within an application.

Apple's "About Mac OS 8.1 Update" file contains the following notes:

"Previously, audio management was determined by your computer, now your
applications control audio input and output setups. There is a new
control strip module which allows easier user selection of sound input
source.

On PCI-based Macs: With Mac OS 8.1, the Sound control panel found in the
Apple Extras folder can no longer be used to set the sound input source.
Use the Monitors & Sound control panel or a new control strip module to
change the input source.

On PCI-based Macs Changing the volume in the Sound control strip module
will not unmute the computer. If you have selected the mute check box in
the Monitors & Sound control panel, you must use Monitors & Sound to
unmute the computer."

Check your OS8.1 docs for control strip
