Hi There

Just for the record, my technical comprehension is low to medium for computer problems. And thank you for setting up this website. I look forward to your response.

I installed Lotus Notes 6.5 on my iBook (2002, 800 MHz, G3) because my office uses it for internal email. First installation, I did not have an id file, but went ahead anyways, unknowingly. While configuring, I entered a domino server name which was the url for accessing my office email off the web (webmail) and the corresponding password (thought it would work). I finished configuration, and then the program didn't work.

Our IT consulant then sent me my specific id file. I uninstalled Lotus Notes, knowing that I probably set something up incorrectly, and then reinstalled immediately without restarting the computer. I then double-clicked on the id file icon, which seemed to have performed some strange configuration for the program, but seemed to get me to the same point as my previous configuration. I then tried to double click on the actual application icon, and an error message popped up saying "Unable to open names and address book (names.nsf), due to error 'file does not exist'. Locations cannot be used until the problem has been corrected." Then I press OK on this error message, and I get "File does not exist" and then OK again, and then the program quits on me. After this happened, I uninstalled and reinstalled again, this time, double clicking on the application icon (as opposed to the id icon) and following the configuration process as I'm supposed to, selecting my id file when requested, etc. When the configruation process finished, same messages came up. We tried to remedy the situation by accessing the "File", "Locations" folder, but could not make any changes. We are lost and don't know what to do.

Our suspicion is that there is a file somewhere, from a previous configuration or install, that is messing things up. But I'm doing clean "uninstalls" and "reinstalls". Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

the reason it is coming up with the "unable to open names and address book (names.nsf) due to file does not exist" is because you may not be pointing to the right server, as the url you use to view it via the web, is NOT the same as the address you put into lotus notes, so your .id file isnt pointing to the right .nsf file (the name should be the same as your id file)

it should look something more along the lines of

abcserver\AUS\YOURCOMPANY

or something along the lines of that.

hope this helps!

Thank you, David (and sorry for the delayed reply). That makes sense, but, I am wondering how I can remedy this problem. I suspect that the id file that they gave me has the appropriate .nsf file, but my previous configurations (using the url, i.e. the incorrect address) is overriding this new configuration, possibly because the 'clean uninstall' that I did is not as clean as I thought it would be. Perhaps there's a leftover file that's messing things up?

Otherwise, the id file might be wrong. Someone working on a PC sent me the id file - would it be the same for windows as Mac?

Thanks,
Laura

ok you need to goto the locations tab under "mobile" and then from there goto the "location" you are using.

from there, make sure you are pointed to the right .nsf file on the server under the mail tab. also, make sure you are pointing to the right server.

also, check under the connections part of the mobile section that your connections are set to "use for * user, * location"

its quite complicated to set up and describe with words.

but the reason your getting that $inbox error is because its not being pointed to the right file on the domino server.

Thank you for the info, David. I understand the root of the problem (i.e. domino server name entered is not directing me to the right server), but I am having trouble getting into the program to fix the problem. The program quits on me the moment I open it (after showing the error message, I press OK, another error message, and then it quits). I can't access the file/mobile/ drop down menus. I can't access any of the menus. The only time I can access, is when I install the program and have it open for the first time. Should I uninstall and reinstall again, using the same id file? Or should I check out whether there is a problem with the id file first?

Thanks again.

hmm sounds to me like you need to reinstall lotus notes, an id file wont make it crash, normally.
