Shankar,
First, let's get rid of all the files before you start fresh.
Download NortonUninstall.sit.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...&osv=&osv_lvl=
There is a download link about half way down the page. Let me know if you have trouble getting to that site.
Double-click the NortonUninstall.sit file that you downloaded.
The file is expanded.
Open the NortonUninstall folder.
Double-click the NortonUninstall.command file.
Type your Mac OS X administrator password, and then press return.
When you type your password, no characters will appear.
Do one of the following:
To remove all Symantec files and folders, type 1
To quit NortonUninstall without removing any files, type 2
Press return.
After NortonUninstall finishes removing all of the Symantec files, on the Terminal menu, click Quit Terminal.
Now, double check to make sure you have no more Norton files. To do this, just open a window and in the search box type in Norton. If Spotlight still finds them, when you click on the file, the location of that file will show at the very bottom of the window.
Manually move each file that is found. It will be easier to open a new finder window to do the finding of the file and trashing it, leaving the search results window on one side.
You also have to do a search for Symantec. There are some files with symantec in the name of the file.
Double check the hard drive>Library>Receipts and trash all the Norton or Symantec files in there.
Now restart the computer. Run Disk Utility (in Applications>Utilities) to repair permissions.
Now try installing Norton Anti Virus. Make sure you select Easy Install and install it in the Applications folder. Do not allow the installer to get updates.
Once that is done, just log out of the system using Apple Menu>Log out. It will bring you to the log in screen. Now log in.
Now go to Live Update (Applications>Norton Solutions) and Click on Customize this update. Now see what comes up. If it is just the definitions, allow the installation.

Let me know if you need further assistance and thank you for using MacOSX.com !
