This is my first time posting.

I am trying to help my local public library fix a Mac "clamshell" iBook notebook running OS 9.1, which they provide for checkout to their patrons. I am a PC-oriented person, but with AppleSupport I have thus far been able to help them fix several of their laptops over the last two years. The support period expired several months ago and I am trying to do this on my own. The problem is that the admin login we normally use to get in to changes settings, etc. seems to have disappeared, while the restricted user profile still works fine. The other problem is that the library disabled the CD-ROM drive so that people checking out the notebook would not try to install software on the system. Thus I cannot run the software recovery disc or even a hardware checking disc, compounding the problem further. Is there some way we can access or restore the admin profile without using the CD drive or is there a way to re-enable it outside of the admin profile? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Is the CD drive disabled via the software or via the hardware? If by software, is it only disabled on the restricted account or on all accounts? Either way, have you tried starting up from the disk using the "C" key when you have the gray screen?

If that doesn't work, I do know how to do Network Startup (at least i think)

You will need an ethernet crossover cable and another mac with an ethernet port.

restart, and while it's restarting hold down the "N" key. It should then search over the ethernet for a bootable disk. Once it starts up, I would try to repair permissions using disk utility (/applications/utilities/disk utility) or (/system folder/control panels/disk utility) its been a while since i've used os9, so bear with me. if none of these work...well then you're kind of messed up then arent you?

if that doesnt work take it in to genius bar at your nearest apple store.
