I've been so stupid to try a .Mac account. Now I can't get it out of my system. I've disabled syncing .Mac but now iSync is doing weird as well.
Problem:
I've got a Sony Ericsson K700i. Syncing worked fine. Since I've set up .Mac (and after I disabled it) I can't sync my phone from the iSync icon in the upper bar. I can only do it from the iSync.app window.
What's wrong with the bar icon? Where does it get it's to-sync list from?
This is very anoying because now I have to open the iSync app all the time.
Any ideas?

Paul,
In OS 10.4 the Sync icon in the menu bar is for .Mac. Go to System Preferences>.Mac
Click on the Sync button. At the very bottom of that pane is Show status in Menu Bar. Uncheck that.
Now Open iSync. When the icon shows in your Dock, click and hold on the sync icon. Select Keep in Dock.
Now the Sync preferences select Show status in the Menu bar. After the first time you do a sync with your phone, you should be able to use the Sync icon in the menu bar.

Thanks,
However, this doesn't do the job.
I get the same icon in the menu bar. It has the same menu content and when I look in the .Mac preft, the ShowStatus is checked again. So I'm back from where I've started.
When iSync is not running and I select Sync Now from the menu bar, it doesn't do anything with my phone. However, when iSync is running, it picks up my bluetooth devices and start synchronising.
So, isn't the idea of the menu icon that I can sync without starting iSync? It worked that way in 10.3.
Man, I should have never installed this .Mac crap. I could always re-install Tiger...
Thanks so far!

Paul,
What kind of connect does your Sony Ericsson phone have to sync? Is it USB, infrared, or bluetooth?
I found a few work arounds and one of them should work.
It maybe a firewall problem (10.4 does have a stronger firewall)
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Sharing.
Click the Firewall tab.
Click Stop to turn off the firewall.
Alternatively, if you want, leave firewall on (which is recommended) and configure the firewall settings to open the port to the phone. Click New and enter these settings:
Port Name: Other
Port Number, Range or Series: 3004
Description: phone

If you have less than 300k of memory available on your Symbian OS-based phone when you try to set it up in iSync 2 (included with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger), you'll get the following error message:
"An error occurred while copying iSync Agent to your phone. iSync could not copy iSync Agent to your phone. Please check the following: Your phone is turned on. Bluetooth is turned on on your phone."
Symbian OS-based phones (such as the Sony Ericsson P800 or P900, Nokia 3600, Nokia 3620, Nokia 3650, Nokia 3660, Nokia 6600, Nokia 7650, and Nokia N-Gage) need at least 300k of memory available for iSync 2 to set them up for syncing. A good way to make more memory available on your phone is to delete pictures, sounds, movies, or other applications that you don't want anymore (check the documentation that came with the phone for more information).
After making at least 300k of memory available, turn the phone off and back on again, then use iSync 2 to set it up for syncing.
If you're not sure what type of OS your phone uses, check the documentation that came with it to find out whether it's a Symbian OS device or not. While this does not include your model phone, it might be worth trying.

Before syncing with iSync, open the phone's Calendar application.
Quit the phone's Calendar application. This creates a database file on the phone that iSync needs.
Use iSync to sync the phone and the computer.

I tired to check out Sony's support pages, and they only talk about Windows syncing. Let me know if one of these helps.

Dear Cheryl,
I've got a K700i (non-Symbian) connected via bluetooth. Furthermore a PB12'G4 and OS10.4
This what I just did:
1. Turned bluetooth on on laptop
2. Turned bluetooth on on phone
3. Disabled firewall on laptop
4. Made sure iSync is NOT running
5. Selected "Sync now" from menu bar
6. >>> Nothing happened. Icon kept rotating, no sync.
7. Started iSync.app
8. Minimized application
9. Selected "Sync now" from menu bar
10. >>> Phone displayed "SYNCHRONIZING NOW" (succes)
11. Quitted iSync
12. Selected "Sync now" from menu bar
13. >>> Nothing happened. Icon kept rotating, no sync.
14. Disabled bluetooth on both devices
Conclusion: when selecting "Sync now", the phone will only sync when the iSync.app application is running. Otherwise it will do nothing (or at least try to contact .Mac, unsuccessfully).
By the way, what is the best way to contact Apple with this remark/bug?
Why are you thanking me for using MacOSX.com? I should be thanking you for your help, which I am doing now. Thanks a lot!

Paul,
One of the articles I read stated that some bluetooth phones and iSync 2 will not work unless you open the iSync app and click on sync now. I think this is a bug in iSync and more than likely will be corrected in a future update.
To send feedback to Apple go to:
http://www.apple.com/support/isync/
Scroll down to the bottom of the page. There is a box labeled Mac OS X feedback. While the page shows iChat AV, the link is really for iSync.
And I say thank you because you came here rather than another web help site.
