Hey Guys,

I need an urgent solution for my problem. I have a brand new Mac Book Pro only 2 weeks old and I was using it this morning. I travelled to work and when I arrived, I tried to boot it. For some reason it is staying on the grey screen which has an apple and also a timer spinning in clockwise direction. I therefore booted from the OS X CD and opened Disk Utility and under First Aid I firstly checked the SMART to ensure it was Verified and then I ran a Verify Disk and a Repair Disk both of which results were saying that the HD appears to be ok. However when I run a Verify Disk Permissions and Repair Disk Permissions I am getting the error listed below in a pop up window:

First Aid Failed

Disk Utility stopped verifying permissions on HD because the following error was encountered:

The underlying task reported failure.

Now in the disk utility message window the following results were listed:

Verify permissions for "HD"
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.

Permissions verification complete.

I look forward to your response as to the way forward.

Hello Richard

Thanks for using macosx.com and I will try to assist/advise you as best I can...

I cannot be 100% from here obviously but don't like the sound of that at all - as your MacBook Pro is so new I really think you should contact Apple support about it immediately. Basically you should not be having issues of this sort on a clean new Mac - if nothing else your call will be logged and if the issue is not resolved by the Apple Support team you will have it on record that you were having issues with the Mac, and this can prove useful if you decide that you need to press for a replacement drive or even laptop if the problem is not rectified.

There are a lot of things I can tell you to do but at this stage I think it is Apple who should be advising you.

Let me know how it progresses
