We have a situation in a mixed Mac / PC environment involving PC users accessing Mac-created Illustrator files:
MAC user mounts our file server using IP Address
User creates Illustrator Document
Linked file (tiff, ai, psd) is placed onto document (File/Place)
File is saved.
PC user log onto network
User Opens Mac-created AI file
User recieves message "Could not find the linked file
. Replace it with another file?
This message is recieved even though the linked file has not be moved from its orginal location.
Then same thing happens if the file originates on a PC and is opened by a MAC user.
If anyone could provide me with an explanation of why this might be happening, and a solution to it, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance-
Doug
Howdy! It has to do with the inherent differences between mac and pc files. Mac files have 2 directory forks and PC files only have one.
Even on macs when a different computer opens the same files on a server, inevitably you have to relink placed files. Illustrator is the worst at this, InDesign seems to find files by itself a lot more.
As far as a solution you might talk to your IT person to see if he can set up a more workable solution.
Here's a great site for more explanation on mac/pc file differences and for sharing files between these two computers:
