Dear pandj,
There is a firmware bug in certain Apple hard drives that can affect Energy Saver performance.
The easiest solution (and the safest) is to turn off Energy Saver. The savings you are currently gettings is not great (around 15%) so you are not going to lose much. As an additional option, install a screen saver on you computer. This can be activated when you leave the computer. Or you can simply shut the montior off, but leave the computer on.
The other alternative is install the Apple Firmware update. More information about this can be found at
http://www.stclairsoft.com/Sleeper/firmware_bug.html. I STRONGLY recommend you consult with Apple before even attempting to use it.
