TICKET ARCHIVE -> Mac G4 AGP Sawtoothinstalling internal modem

I just bought a Mac G4/450 AGP Sawtooth (Ebay). It did not come with an internal modem. I bought a used one off ebay. The G4 has a jack for plugging in an external modem. On opening the case I find the jack for the telephone line velcroed off to the side, similar to the jack that came with this small modem card that doesn't appear to slide into any slot. Any suggestions where I begin to install this or where can I go for some diagrams?
Just curious,
Phil

Hi Mcslibrary

I've put a service manual here that will guide you;

Thank you!
Within an hour of printing out that manual I had the modem installed and running.
My next question - should I post this to the system?
Anyway, is there a primer on networking 2 macs?
1 - beige G3/233 OS 9.2
1- G4/450 agp sawtooth - Os 9.1 booting from OS X10.2
The G3 has all my scsi devices and printer. I'd like to be able to use them without putting a scsi card in the G4 and getting an adapter for the printer. Can I connect them with a regular phone line or does it have to be CAT5?
Thanks again for your help, Bobw.

The network information was excellent, HOWEVER - I've followed all the steps configuring both machines for sharing, when I go to connect to the G3 from the the G4 it's asking me for the file sharing password. It was 6 or 7 years ago when we set up the G3, naming the computer and so forth, and I must have put in this 8 digit (that's the number of place holders shown) password. I have tried every password(s) and combinations there of - I'm not that creative particularly with our home equipment. Where can I go to retrieve or change my password? I am at wit's end being so close to having this experiment work. You are my last hope.
Thanks so much for all your help.
Regards,
Phil

In OS 9, go to the System Folder>Preferences folder and delete any File Sharing and User & Groups Preference files, then set it up again.

Thank you very much. I finally got the 2 machines networked. A good learning experience but the final results fell short of expectations.

My situation - Beige Mac G3/233 running OS 9.2 with scsi devices (scanner, zip, negative scanner). Internet crapped out on Netscape 7 and the Netscape e-mail program would no longer work. Switching to IE 5.0 and Outlook Express helped somewhat but even IE started getting jiggy. SO, I figured it time to move up a generation. Got a G4/450 agp sawtooth on ebay (a very clean machine), no OS so I've installed up to 9.1 and OS X.2 (a freebee from Apple through education site - I'm a librarian). I love how it drops into classic with my older programs.

What I wanted was by networking to access the scsi devices through the G3. What I'm finding is it's not that easy. I got a scsi card on e-bay for the G4. Come to find out the cards port doesn't match my chain of scsi's so I'm now looking for an adapter. Mother of God this has been an ordeal but if any consolation the G4 behaves much better with the internet, at least as far as I can go with a 28.8 connection. And I'm hobbled by having only one monitor. Maybe I'll get a used one and use the G3 as a standby.

So, thank you for all your help. If you have any suggestions for my situation, please feel free. This is an amazing site. I wish I'd found it 7 years ago.

This company has loads of SCSI adapters. They should have what you need;

Thanks. I wound up buying the specific 25 pin scsi pci card off e-bay.
Thank you for all of your help. Phil Durkin

I'm on to another set of issues. Maybe I should post it as a general question or do I address it to you, Bob? I'm a little unsure how this question forum works. Anyway, I'll do both.

My used G4/450 agp Sawtooth came blank. I had OS X 10.2 (free version for being in education). Trying to find upgrades - got Safari and Quicktime OK but 10.28 download is so big (100mb it says) - that our 28.8 dialup connection has given out every time - I set it up to run at night. We live in a rural area and will never get better than 28.8. Suggestions?

Downloading that update on your connection will be painful.

There's a program named 'Speed Download' that will resume downloads you can use. When you get disconnected, you can just resume the download after connecting. You can get it here;

http://www.yazsoft.com/download.html

This is the direct download link for the version for 10.2.8;

There's also a program called Always Online that keeps you from being logged out;

Thanks again. I'll try your suggestions and see what happens. I'm so impressed with this site. And how do you know all this stuff? I'm wrestling with remembering passwords!
Thanks.

Glad I could help.

For passwords, I keep a Word file on my machine, password protected, with all my passwords, and also have a printed copy for easy access.

Bob - it ain't over. Please read. I did download 10.2.8 at school (8 minutes - I can't believe it). Burned a cd. I installed it, everything seemed to run OK until I restarted the computer - got the gray apple screen then the blue OSX apple, installing . . .
Finally it goes to a blue screen with a mouse pointer and that's it. the mouse moves the arrow and that's it.
SO, I restarted, I put in the 10.2 disk, held down c and reinstalled 10.2. I have tried installing 10.2.8 twice and the same results. Fortunately all the stuff I've installed hasn't disappeared.
Maybe buying panther is the answer.
My Mac honeymoon is just about over.
Thanks for your help,
Phil

Sounds like maybe the 10.2.8 download got corrupted, either in downloading or burning.

I've seen this happen before, especially if the file was downloaded and burned on a PC.

I burned it on an e-mac.
My latest adventure - I got the right pci card for the G4 to handle the beige g3 25 pin scsi devices. I just want to connect my astra 610s scanner (for which there are no OS x drivers) and Minolta dimage negative scanner (ditto for drivers). Now my photoshop 7 (installed on the classic drive) will not recognize the scanner. I have astra plug-ins but I can't remember if I drag them into the extensions folder or not. Anyway, it tells me the extension folder is being used by the OS X, so I can't drag them in anyway.

I'm coming to the conclusion that I should just leave my G3 and scsi devices alone, buy an OS X compatible scanner and use the G3 only when I need to scan negatives.
This trying to combine 2 machines, though an interesting exercise, just wasn't meant to happen. Great as Macs are they aren't beyond this upgraded obsolescence program tha capitalist computer manufacturers have foisted on us.
Sorry for the rant,
Phil
