I have a cable based internet connection that connects to the computer through a USB port. It works fine with my PC but with my Mac Mini it just isn't detecting the fact that any internet connection is coming through it. Its a USB connector, as I said before, converted from an ethernet cable (which I have also tried to connect with, also recieving the same result)

Sam,
First, check the Network pane in System Preferences (light switch in the dock).
The first window that opens should show a list of available internet connections and if any of them are connected. A green dot in front of the connection will show connection and a red dot shows no connection.
You should see USB in the list. Click on it, then click on the Configure button at the bottom.
If you don't see USB, use the Show pull down menu to select Network Port Configurations. Now you will see a list of possible connections. A check mark in the box next to the name will activate the network port.
Now in the Show menu select USB.
You should be connected via DHCP. If your ISP needs you to use PPOE, then click on that tab.
A new window will open. Check mark the Connect Using PPOE and fill in the blanks. You want it to save your password so you don't need to enter it every time.
Now click on the Apply Now button and see if you can get a web page.

Cheryl,
thanks for your help so far.
I've gotten up to the 'Network Port Configurations' window, and there is no USB setting, nor is there any way of adding USB to the show area that I can find, including in the 'add...' menu, which has firewire, ethernet, airport and '4 to 6', which I'm not certain about.
again, thanks for the help.

Sam,
In order to use a USB internet connection, you need a USB driver that goes with the modem. Depending on the brand and model of your modem will depend if there is a USB driver for your Mac.
Can you try using the Ethernet connection - this time after connecting the ethernet cable from the modem to the computer, go to Network Pane and set up the TCP/IP window to Using DHCP and Ethernet Automatic (in the Ethernet tab).
What kind of set up do you have for your internet connection? Is your PC also connected to the modem or do you have a router?
