When I put in a DVD, it doesn't appear on the desktop or in Finder. DVD player pops up because that's what I told it to do in settings, but nothing else. When I click "play" it says "Disk format not supported" or something. In Macintosh HD it just has it as "Audio CD". How can I get it to recognize and play DVDs?
Dear James,
My name is Vinko and I will attempt to assist you.
What type of DVD are you trying to play on your MacBook. It sounds like it is a dual format DVD or Audio DVD.
As you may know DVD are protected by 10 different region codes, so that DVD of a particular region can only be played/viewed with players of the same region. Unless the DVD player in question is unlocked.
You may also aware that all Macintosh optical drives allows you to change their region codes 5 times. After the 4th time the region you set it to will be the permanent region the optical drive will stay.
One alternative is to use an application that ignores these region codes to attempt to play DVDs. DVD Player is NOT one of them. One such program is,
VLC (aka VideoLAN Client). If you decides to use VLC, you should consider changing your "CDs & DVDs" preferences in the System Preferences to tell your MacBook to always use VLC to open DVDs.
Had you tried playing the said DVD on another computer or a regular DVD player from a home theatre?
I hope this helps.
Regards,
