TICKET ARCHIVE -> Mac Os 10.3 Will Not Wake Up From Sleep

I've got an issue that popped up unexpectedly today: my Power PC G4 running mac OS 10.3.9 has stopped waking up from sleep in response to keyboard or mouse inputs. It goes to sleep on schedule after 15 minutes (or in response to telling it to do so in the menu).

The keyboard and mouse work fine when it is already running. Restarting with the reset button on the front of the machine works. I haven't installed any new software or hardware recently. It's never done this before.

What I've tried so far:
- shutting down and restarting multiple times
- switching the USB port that the keyboard is using
- reinstalling and fully updating the OS

Any other suggestions would be most appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Hi John,

Thank you for choosing macosx.com, my name is Jim perhaps I can help out here. Let me make sure that this is NOT a PowerBook. PowerBooks have a Power Management Unit that can cause this.

Assuming this is a G4 desktop like the QuickSilver or Mirror Drive Door model, the first think I would do is to disconnect any other USB devices leaving only the keyboard and mouse connected. Make sure the keyboard and mouse is connected directly to the desktop. No hubs. (I'm assuming you have two USB ports on the desktop) Does this make a difference?

You have tried a different keyboard, do you have another mouse?

If you unplug the mouse and plug it back in does it wake?

If these do not wake the 'puter up, let me know what model of G4 you are using and I'll dig a little deeper.

Good Luck

Jim

Hey thanks Jim - I found out who the culprit is! My Intelliflash flash memory card reader was making it stop waking up properly. Problem solved!

Thanks again for the help!

I'll bet it was hanging up the USB when in sleep so the computer could not "see" the keyboard or mouse.

Congratulations on finding this one. Way to go!

Jim
