Hi thanks in advance for your help, my issue is the following:
I tried to install the latest update in my system , i was operating with a 10.3.8 mac os x version on my G4 early 2004 iBook. I used the software update option on the system preferences menu in the finder, but when it was installing half way a sign came up saying that the installation could not be succesful and that i should try to do it from the finder, other updates were fine, for itunes and a security update. Then i thought i should go in to the mac support website and download the update from there. I tried that and took the option saying if you wanted to update from 10.3.8 to 10.3.9, then the download started and towards the end of the download a sign came up saying that the disk could not be mounted. Then i thought that it would be a good idea to restart the computer maybe the first installation was succesful after all and i was reinstalling the software. Then i tried that and the computer restarted but it never made it to the log in screen or the desktop. A sign came up saying that i should restart the computer by holding down the turn off switch for a few seconds, then i did that and the computer was off and i restarted it again. The usual start up proceadure was present until the warning sign came up again , the signs tells you to restart the computer in five different languages. Any way i ve tried to reinstall the computer several times and the same warning sign comes up half way after start up and the computer freezes there and it doesnt even make it to the log in screen... What do you suggest i can do ro fix the problem? Thanks in advance.....

Rafael,
In order of appearance, I'd try the following:
-disconnect all devices from your iBook (except the power adapter) and restart
-Go to your Disk Utility (Applications>Utilities folder) and repair disk permissions.
If no luck, then
-Boot from the original CD by inserting the CD and holding the "C" key down after pressing the power button.
-Go to your Disk Utility (Applications>Utilities folder) and repair disk permissions.
If no luck, then
-restart with the command and "s" keys pressed ("Command" is the Apple key)
-at the prompt, type fsck -f
-Go to your Disk Utility (Applications>Utilities folder) and repair disk permissions.

Matt i have already repair disk permissions by booting from my install cd but when i quit the install cd and restart the computer it freezes again after re start displaying the same message about "restarting my computer by holding the start button for a few seconds" the message in in another five languages. Do you have any other suggestion? i cant get passed that message into my log in window, i ve been trying to restart it over and over and the same happens , the computer freezes after a few seconds and the message i just mentioned appears on the screen!
Thanks in advance

You may need to repair permissions (via cd) numerous times. If that doesn't work, move on to the second step... hold down the command and s keys during start-up and run fsck -f
After running fsck -f, type reboot. Once you'd run fsck and rebooted, you should be back in business. I would run disk utility again, back-up your docs and reinstall from the original CD.

Matt i already tried but not exactly the command you just mentioned, but the one on the apple site. The fsck reported a failure. Then i also tried to log in by safe mode and the computer rejected it by rebooting itself several times. I also tried single user mode and the fsck. And nothing improved... Then i tried archive and install, but after installation it reported and error, the cause maybe that i only have 3.1 GB left of space in the disk. Is there a way to free some space without having access to the desktop? I could also try a clean installation but i need to recover certain data and i dont have a firewire... Is there any other way? Hope you can suggest me something , i appreciate your help!
Thanks

Rafael,
Do you have access to another Mac? If so, you'll be able to recover data by using the problem Mac as an external hard drive. To do this:
-turn off the iBook
-connect a FireWire cable to the iBook and the rescue Mac
-With the recue Mac already running, start the iBook while holding down the "t" key (on the iBook) until you see the FireWire symbol displayed on the iBook's screen
The iBook's harddrive will show up on the rescue Mac. At this point, you can rescue files from the iBook. If your rescue Mac is using the same OS as the iBook, you can run Disk Utilities from the the rescue Mac to repair the iBook drive... I'd be inclined to do a clean install regardless...
Let me know how it goes.

Hi thanks a lot for the advice, and now my ibook is back again. I transfered the files via the target mode and did a clean install. Now i am wondering what kind of files to rescue , all my personal data is saved, but what about all my previous preferences or stickies, and bookmarks, mail and so on? How can i transfer it back or where do i place it? What i ve done so far is put it under users-library and then in the respective folders, is that ok? and one more thing what about updating back to the latest system?
i want to install the later updates, and i dont know how to best go about it! I tried to do it through the software update option, and the options it gave me were the latest updates 10.3.9. So i was wondering if the process of updating your system should not tak place step by step and chronologicallly starting with the first updates after 10.3? That is 10.3.1 and so on? I just dont want to experience the same problem and the system crashing because i went straight to the 10.3.9 avoiding the previous updates... whats the best way to do it?
Thanks in advance.

You should be ok to run software update. Generally speaking, the update will include all updates required. Repairing permissions prior to running the update should help to avoid a repeat of the last episode.
