Howdy!
You might find a lot of opinions on this. The truth is that it depends on how much of your data you need to backup and whether or not you will need to access it quickly.
Some Archive apps do a great job of compressing your data to fit it into a smaller place than it originally occupied. Others let you pick bits & pieces and back just them up. And there are lots of ways to store your data, too.
A good place to start is with a simple DVD burner and a program like Toast. Toast can 'remember' which folders you want burned and burn them again & again for you as their contents change. Toast also comes with a utility called Deja Vu which will backup data for you on a schedule, directly to Toast. If you only need lite duty backups, this is a good way to go.
Another good place to go is Apple's Dot Mac system. dotMAc comes with a utility called Backup 2. Backup can also be scheduled to run, can burn DVD's, copy to another Hard Disk Drive, or your iDisk (an internet disk drive provided to dotMac customers). Backup is great because it comes with many Quick Picks that target your User and Application data, like passwords, settings, bookmarks, your address book, iCal calendars, etc. It can also restore from a backup and put your data right back where it goes. It costs $99 a year for dotMac, but it really is a great deal, just for the iDisk and Backup! (You also get 4 email addresses, a webpage authoring program, and access to Apple's training center) It's a good deal. If you decide to join, let me know - I can get a refferal!
Another great app, and very popular though expensive - is Dantz Retrospect. Retrospect is probably the most thorough backup utility for OS X. It has a great deal of flexibilty. But it is expensive.
There are some free/shareware options. My personal favorite is a program called Carbon Copy Cloner. It will make an exact duplicate of your hard drive to another hard drive. You can boot from that 2nd drive if you need to, and everything will be exactly the same. Running this app takes some time, but it works flawlessly most of the time, and it does mean that ALL your data will be backed up. CCC is a fantasticly useful app, I'd suggest you look into it. If you have a hard drive of equal or greater size than your main drive, it really is the best way to insure that you can keep on working the same way you do now should your HD fail. Once you have your bad HD replaced, your can use CCC to clone your clone back to your computer, and never miss a beat!
Hope I've helped!
