Hello,

I have a MacBook Pro with the following overview:

Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP31.0070.B02
SMC Version: 1.16f8
Serial Number: XXXXXXXXXXX
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled

I bought this in November in order to move from a PC to Mac. From the beginning I was having problems with apps crashing. I had installed FF and TBird and I thought that it was due to 3rd Party Apps. However, after weeks of frustration, I decided to reformat and reinstall the OS, which I did two weekends ago. I have installed all of the updates from Apple and since the install, I have cut and saved every crash report prior to sending to Apple. I have used Disk Utilities to verify disk permissions and repair disk permissions (I also kept the output from this as well.

I do not have AppleCare, but I did buy the xtended warranty from Best Buy and have no problem bringing this back. However, I do not believe that this is a hardware problem, so I am sure that they will be limited in what they will do other than keep my machine for a period of time.

I am at my wits end and could use any insight or advice you may have to resolve this frustrating issue. I have attached the last system crash for your review, but can send all of the crash files if necessary. Any assistance in resolving this is greatly appreciated.

Tom,

What you have listed here is a backtrace and does not help me much since I cannot see the whole thing and don't have access to the other log files.

Here is a few questions that will help me help you:

1) is all 4GB of ram Apple Ram, or did you have it added at best buy?
2) what is running on the system when this happens? Is it consistantly that (those applications)
3) is it telling you to restart, or is it simply the apps that are crashing and can be reopened after.
4) when you did the erase and install, did you bring over any of the backed up user data or applications? If so, what was the method for doing this

Take care

Thanks for the quick response. Here are my answers:

1) is all 4GB of ram Apple Ram, or did you have it added at best buy?

A: No both 2GB modules are not Apple RAM, they are:

2GB Patriot PSA22GICDS & 2 GB Kingston KTA-MB667/2GR. I did have to remove both to get the information and made sure that they were both well seated.

2) what is running on the system when this happens? Is it consistently that (those applications)

A: They are all Apple Apps (Safari, Mail, iCal, iTunes). Most of the time it is Safari. I have not installed any 3rd party apps at this time trying to identify the issue

3) is it telling you to restart, or is it simply the apps that are crashing and can be reopened after.

A: I have to system failures, where the I get the Apple version of the BSOD, where all I can do is power down by using the power button. The rest are all applications quitting during use and requiring a restart.

4) when you did the erase and install, did you bring over any of the backed up user data or applications? If so, what was the method for doing this

A: I did not use TimeMachine to reinstall. It was a clean install. I did a custom install where I did not install the MS office sample sw or the iWorks sample sw as I installed the full version of iWorks. I also did not install all of the language support files as I did not need them. I only moved documents to the MacBook as I have kept media files on an external HD for the time being.

As I said in my first email, I have all of the crash reports and can pull the logs if you feel that it will assist you with the diagnosis. I will say that I have seen on several forums that this has happened to others.

Thanks Again,

Tom

Tom,

my first impression from reading your response is the ram is causing the OS to crash. If you still have the ram from Apple, try replacing it with the OEM ram, do another erase and run for a day or so.

I've seen this many times before and it is almost always ram that is damaging the file system and OS.
