Hi ..

I have a quick question.

I use Boot Camp on my Macbook Pro to use Windows XP. I've recently discovered Parallels, and was looking to transfer all my stuff into Parallels in the Mac's OS. Unfortunately, I had partitioned my drive to use 50 GBs for the Boot Camp partition. And now need to reduce it down, so I can add back more space to my MAC OS partition. Is there a non-destructive way of doing this, where I don't have to delete the BootCamp partition?

After reading forums and some online help .. I'm really confused because there are some people who are saying that it is possible to use a program like Partition Magic .. and some people who say that it's not possible .. my MAC OS drive is in FAT 32 .. and my BootCamp drive is in NTFS.

Having to delete the boot camp partition and making another one will just be really REALLY inconvenient for me. Please help!

Dear Bilal,

My name is Vinko and I will attempt to assist you.

As far as I know you can change the partitions using Boot Camp in a non-destructive manner to the Mac OS X partition, but I believe one cannot say the same for the corresponding Windows partition.

BTW: the Mac should be HFS+ and your Windows partition should be FAT32. If you format your Windows partition into FAT32 then you will only be able to read the Windows partition from the Mac OS X partition. If you made the Windows partition FAT32 then you can read and write from your Mac OS X partition.

Since you are already considering using Parallels. I believe you will find that Parallels is a much better solution for using Windows along with your Mac OS X.

You will be surprise how fast Parallels is compared to a normal Windows computer running the same Windows OS. You will hardly notice the difference between a Windows OS running in Parallel and via Boot Camp.

What I suggest is to move any data you may have on your Windows Partition to your Mac or to an external storage (Flash drive, external hard disk, etc.) then use Boot Camp to reclaim your hard drive for the Mac OS X and stick with Parallels.

The other benefits for using Parallels are:
- you can use Windows application whenever you want without disrupting what you're doing on the Mac OS X.
- you can transfer files back and forth between Windows and Mac OS X easily.
- you can have multiple Windows or Linux OS to start in Parallels anytime.
- you only occupy the amount of disk space that your applications and data within Windows take up, instead of predetermining a fix amount of disk space as in Boot Camp.

I hope this helps.
