Hi, I am a first time Mac user and I have just purchased a 12" Powerbook G4 second-hand. When I turn it on it has a small cursor-like folder with a question mark on it. I figured this is it's way of asking for an OS. No software came with it however, so I've borrowed my friend's MAC OS 9 Install disc, Mac OS x install disc and Mac OS X Tiger. However, I cannot get them to install, the first two say 'Mac mini' on the CDs and the Powerbook refuses to install them and the Tiger requires a previous version of MAC os X to be installed. Help me please I'm begging you!!

First, you cannot boot OS 9 on that model Powerbook. OS 9 can only be used within OS X via Classic. Second, you cannot use OEM installers that came with a specific Mac model to install OS X on other Mac models, they usually will not work. Third, the Tiger DVD you have is an Upgrade version and will not work unless a prior version of OS X is already installed.
Solution: purchase a retail copy of Tiger or an earlier version of OS X. The earliest version of OS X that will run on your type of Powerbook depends upon which specific model it is.

Hello!
Thank you very much for replying! After reading your message I went out and bought a copy of Tiger (£89!) and a really cool Mighty Mouse (£39). Mac is now working beautifully.
Being a new Mac user, I'm not too hot on advanced settings. Perhaps some of you might be able to help me further?
1. I've discovered a wireless network in my building but it won't allow me to connect to it.
2. I don't have much of the software that my mum's iMac has, e.g. iDVD, iMovie, iPhoto and some other bits and pieces that came with hers. Any ideas on where I can get these?
Eagerly awaiting your reply.

If it's a password protected network, then you will not be able to access it without knowing the password.

These applications are part of the iLife package which must be purchased from Apple unless it came as part of the installed software with the Mac. Because you bought a used Mac the software won't be included unless it was included with the computer when it was new. If it was and is not installed, then you need to take that up with the seller. There are no "guarantees" when you buy used equipment.

Thank you again for your kind words of wisdom! Since then, I have bid on a copy of iLife on eBay for a mere £2! Excellent! Thank you once again for your help, I'm sure I'll be in touch in the near future with more dumb-windows-user-typical questions!!
