A tech person installed Mac OS X server software 10.2.8 (6R73) on my old blue and white G3 solely for the purpose of printing from my Epson 2200. The printer is directly connected to the G3. There are 3 computers networked to the printer. Two of the computers don't need to be connected to this server, but mine does. I have a dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5, Mac OS X 10.4.8. Can this software be updated, or do I need to purchase a new version? Do I even need to purchase server software or can I just install the same software (Mac OS X 10.4.8) that I have running on all of the other systems? Thanks for your help, Carole

Sorry your question hasn't been taken by anyone; I will give it a shot!

You don't need OS X server on a desktop computer you're using as a server. OS X Server software is best used with a specially designed server array; they are flat, long silver hard drive enclosures with three or more fans.

I don't think the tech who helped you knew that OS X has a built-in print server that will do what you need. Read the following:

It looks like you could just install 10.3.x system on the G3 (10.4 might be a bit much for it as it really requires at least 512MB RAM for speedy operation) and then set the G3 as a System Preferences/Sharing/Printer Sharing so any computer connected to it can then print from the Epson 2200.

Here's the support page for your printer:
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/s...view&oid=14402

And the mac drivers (OS X 10.3 is supported as well as 10.4 on Intel Based Macs):
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/s...s&platform=All

As with any recommendations you get here, save your old settings and software so you can go back if the situation becomes worse than before. I am pretty sure, however, that my recommendation will work.
