well basically a friend of mine gave me his old powerbook g3 laptop a couple of days ago. he also gave me the mac os x operating system to install. i did like the instructions said in that i installed the 9.1 version before the x version. now nothing really works with the os x version. i can't get help through that and everytime i try to load something else on, it tell me that their is no application to open any kind of files. and then it asks me to open an application to be able to open the file. this is the first apple i've ever had and i'm not used to these operating systems. wondering if you can help? also, would you be able to use windows with an apple computer? just curious!

Sounds like your friend threw you in the deep end
First off -- no you cannot run Windows on your Mac (except via emulation which is unbearably slow for anything other than emergencies).
I'm not really sure what your question is...
What are you trying to load?
Let's suppose you have a Word document (a .doc file). Unless you have MS Office installed on your Mac it isn't doing to magically know what to do with it. Similarly, you can't install random Windows stuff on your Mac.
My guess is that your machine is working fine, but you don't have any of the applications you need installed on the machine. Probably, installing MS Office (for Mac OS X) would make your life a lot easier.
If you don't have access to a copy of MS Office, you might try visiting OpenOffice.org and downloading OpenOffice (if you have a fast internet connection). It gives you a lot of support for MS Office stuff for free.

ok. good to know about windows. i think maybe i didn't ask the right question. when i loaded up 9.1, everything was working fine. i never had any problems opening up anything from the help desk to regular ol' aol. but once i loaded up os x. nothing seems to work. and i mean nothing. i tried using the help desk for but it wouldn't even open. i tried using the dvd player and the same. and i even tried opening up aol, which is already loaded on to the machine and all i'll ever get is their is no application to open up the file or program. nothing really works, so i just went back to working on 9.1. i spoke to my friend who gave me the computer and he said something about file sharing? i have no idea what that means and was wondering if you do?

It sounds like you are using a bunch of "Classic" programs and you're probably best off running under 9.1 (if it meets your needs).
A lot of Classic programs don't behave terribly well under OS X, and it may also be that somehow your installation of 9.1 isn't being properly recognized by OS X.

hey. i have another question. i was wondering since i'm playing around with the os 9.1 if their was any kind of web/internet accelerator that i can download, or anything i can tweak to speed up my surfing at least a little? also, are their any kind of updates or programs that will help my computer perform any better, after all it is pretty old!

Probably the best thing you could do to improve performance would be to find a copy of OS 8.6 (if your powerbook is old enough to run it).
There used to be some web accelerator software for Mac Classic but it may no longer be available.
Try visiting
http://connectix.com/ or use google.
