Hello,

I have a mac mini (power pc) and lately as I have been working on it it has twice forced me to shut down in the middle of what I was doing. I'll be working along and the whole screen fades black with the desktop darkened in the background and there is a message in the middle that says I have to hold down the power button and restart my computer. Does anyone know what would cause this?

There can be a variety of causes for your 'kernel panic', which is what that 'You need to restart your computer' message is called.
Here's a link to some info to help you find out the cause.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106227

Some questions to start you off -
Have you installed or updated any of your major software recently?
Have you upgraded your memory recently?
Are you using an external USB hub, and what devices do you have attached to that (anything new there?)?

You should try the Apple Hardware test, which came with your mini
You will find either a separate disk, or the Restore disk will have Apple Hardware test listed on the label, with simple instructions for booting to that test.
Run the extended test, and get back to me with what you find out....

Hey Dale,

I haven't installed any recent software but I have just bought an external drive. The one thing that was different when these crashes were happening was that I was on a computer to computer network through my airport and my internet sharing was on so the other mac could use my internet. It did crash later even though the other computer wasn't hooked up any longer but my internet sharing was still on.

I have also attached my palm pilot to this computer so that is another usb device that was added recently.

I will do the Apple Hardware test and get back to you with the results. Thanks again.
