Which OS do you currently have installed?

Here are a few things to try

Open up /Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup. If you're using the "Built-in Audio" select it in the "Properties For" drop down menu. Then, in the Audio Output setting, make sure the Format is 44100.0 Hz. Sometimes applications may set that to a lower format and some games don't play sounds properly. I'm not sure if BF1942 is one of those types of games but it's worth a try.

Does BF 1942 have a mute setting you might have accidentally clicked?

Have you tried dumping the preferences? In your Preferences folder try dumping any BF1942 files. If removing those files doesn't work, try removing or renaming the Battlefield 1942 folder in your Documents folder. That folder contains your personal settings for the game. If that fixes the problems then you'll just have to reset your preferences.
