I did A Very Stupid Thing and clean installed OSX 10.4. I am now trying to restore all I used to have. Until I did This Very Stupid Thing I was operating on 10.4.5 and have the updates on CD. So when I updated from said CDs, I got this message:
"You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update."
It was accompanied by a bloody big ! sign on a red background.
I only have dialup so trying to reinstall would be a big problem, but even if I download from a friend's broadband I may get the same message.
Can you help me in installing the updates? Are they necessary?
Regards from a lovely rainy day (rare) in Australia.

Hey Dick!
Me again and this time, from a gloriously sunny day (rare) in England
I have had this issue before, and I have always selected
INSTALL AND KEEP UPDATE and the orange box packages are then stored in
HARD DISK / LIBRARY / RECEIPTS
I think you need to install them in the right order hence you're getting the big (!) sign.

Tx again Jab - will try it when I get of my painfully slow dialup connections. Wonder where you get the emoticon with sunnies seeing as where you live?

Thanks pal - you are right; your advice was not clear!
But maybe my question was not clear either.
To put it succinctly, I have reinstalled OSX 10.4 from the disks and have CDs labelled 10.4.2, 10.4.3 and 10.4.4 (I downloaded 10.4.5 without saving it before I lost all my data).
The infamous ! in front of a stop sign comes up when I try to install each version, from 2 to 4. I have spotlighted (don't you hate what computers have done to the language!) but have had no success.
As I said before, I can go to a mate's computer and download thru his broadband connection. Should I simply download the combo version of 10.4.5 or will the dreaded ! sign occur again.
Am waiting apprehensively on your advice.
Cheers
Dick
PS Rain has cleared prematurely damnit - I love tropical rain. Never mind, the dams are full.

That would certainly save you a lot of headaches in the future. Given that you are going to runn all the updates to get to 10.4.5 anyway, it would make sense to have one file to do it rather than lots of lesser ones.
Download the combo on your chum's broadband, put it on a drive or burn to CD (put it on your iPod in disk mode - you have got an iPod haven't you???

)
It is 125Mb of Apple love and you can get it here:

Still lovely and sunny here, a bit crisp, but then I like it that way.
It's supposed to drop to minus a million degrees and dump a load of snow tonight which might spoil our plans for the horses tomorrow...

Thanks pal - will try it in the next couple of days.

Tx Jab - downloaded the combo from a friend's machine. Worked a treat. One minor point. Since I wiped my disk I have tried to download Windows Media Player for Mac OSX - It's only about 7meg, but after a flash (the only way I can describe it) on the screen and a partial blue bar movement, nothing happens.
Also - and I know this is not strictly an OS X issue, can you help me on this?
I use AppleWorks and NeoOffice to save documents as Word. I have been rebuilding a resume, originally PageMaker, as a Word doc so I can send email job applications. I plan to send the resume as a .doc attachment. Now I have downloaded some nice handwriting typefaces to help my resume stand out (such as my name).
If the recipient doesn't have the particular typeface on his or her machine, will it be displayed or will it default to, say, Courier (thereby defeating the purpose)?
Regards
Dick

Word on the recipient's machine, be it Windows or Mac, will attempt to display the text with the original font as per the font instructions contained within the document.
i.e. if you use Trebuchet MS when you created a document, my Word would check if I have Trebuchet MS available and if so, display it in that font. Failing that, it then checks my substitution rules (e.g. for all references to Trebuchet MS, use Tahoma instead) and where possible will apply the rules otherwise use whatever is the default in the normal.dot master template.
If you want to maintain the specific fonts for your layout, you should save the CV as a PDF (this also prevents anyone else from modifying your details or layout).
• Select FILE and PRINT and in the bottom left corner is a button PDF
• Press PDF and the first item is SAVE AS PDF
Alternatively, you can press PREVIEW which will open the document in PREVIEW as a PDF

Once again you are a champ Jab - I answered my question by sending a friend some examples of the typeface I wished to use. As you wisely said, they defaulted to what was on his Mac (a sans serif face). But I did not think of saving it as a PDF file which I will now do.
Thanks again.

Damn - forgot to ask. I have been trying to download Windows Media Player for Mac os x. It gets halfway to the address then the little blue line disappears and no download occurs. As I have a heartfelt dislike for Mr Gates (on the account I envy his riches built on an inferior operating system) I also tried to download Flip4Mac. Same result.
But other downloads have been successful.

Curious #1: I had never heard of Flip4Mac and I am reasonably up to date. Or at least like to think I am
Curious #2: when I went to download Flip4Mac, the file is coming from... (wait for it...)
http://download.microsoft.com !!!
The links contain a couple of redirects (presumably for logging and audit trails), so at a guess, the connection is dropping somewhere along the various turns before actually getting to the file.
It is a 3.7Mb file so will take a moment to get on your dial-up but try pasting this link to the download file directly into Safari
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...ts%202.0.2.dmg
Windows Media Player is only 7Mb if you download the .BIN version as opposed to the 9.5Mb .HQX version.
Again, try pasting the direct link into Safari:
