I keep getting the same error code on my mac.
Error code -9972 (The underlying task responded failure on exit.) Then it says 'the reason target volume is damaged' when I try and re-install my operating system. It keeps coming up when I verify my hardisk too. I have a mini mac and i'm running panther.

Do you have any ideas? As it irratating me and I have to keep re-installing Mac OSX everytime it happens.

Thanks,

Tom

Tom,

Welcome to Macosx.com

Why do you have to keep installing the OS?

On MS Windows machines re-installing the OS is a common way to cure many ills. This is NOT the case with a Mac. In ten years of using macOS I have never had to do this. The same goes for applications. Quite frankly the process can cause more problems. Its like using a chainsaw to cut your toenails. MS Windows and MacOS are VERY different indeed.

It sounds to me like you have a disk problem and no re-install of OS is going to cure this. You need to run DiskUtilities - the application Apple provided for disk maintenance. It can cure a limited amount of ills but not all. The best application for disk maintenance is Diskwarrior (www.alsoft.com). It really is worth every penny this app - its saved me many times! Also look at TechTool Pro (http://www.micromat.com/) Diskwarrior seems to be the best at disk repair but the later has a few more features.

Anyway, back to DiskUtilities...
To check your drive with this software you will have to start up your computer from the original OS install disk. Insert the cd or DVD and restart the computer holding down the "c" key.
Once booted up you should go to the Utilities menu and select "DiskUtilities".
Now select your system drive and click "repair disk"
Once done quit the application and select restart to boot up normally.
Hopefully this will sort you out.

Another procedure worth doing, to keep your system healthy is to "repair permissions" you can do this again from DiskUtilities but you don't need to start up from the cd. Find DiskUtilities in the Utilities Folder in the Applications folder. Launch DiskUtilities and select your system drive in the left pane and then click "repair permissions". Its worth doing this once a month or so and before (some after too) any major software install.

Also consider leaving your computer switched on at night sometimes, particularly at the weekends, as it will do various self repair/system checks at that time. Make sure it is on and not in "sleep" mode. You can set your screen to sleep after a while from the energy saver preference in System Preferences. Make sure you set "put computer to sleep" on "never". Or run a screen saver - also controlled from Sys. Pref..

Feel free to get back to me if you need further assistance.

regards

Tom

Hi Tom thanks for the email. But i'm also getting the error message i mentioned above when i go to repair the disk on the disk utilities from the hardware test. So i've had no choice but to re-install the OS.

What do u suggest?

Thanks,

Tom

Tom,

We need to establish whether the disk is damaged in a format way or a physical way.

When you re-install the OS do you reformat the disk also? Also known as an "erase and install". This procedure results in loosing everything on your disk and having a completely fresh set-up, like it was when you first switched on the computer when new.

If this is the way you are doing things and you are still getting errors then I suspect you have a faulty drive. the only cure is a new drive. As the warranty is still fresh then it wont cost you more than a return to the store where you bought the mini.

perhaps you are performing an "archive and install", where your data is not erased and old system files are saved in back-up folder. This method does not re-format the disk. It could be that your problem is related to a bad formatted disk and not a physical fault with the disk and the "archive and install" procedure will not cure the problem. You need to re-format the disk if this is the case.

The Hardware test disk that came with your computer may help to find what the problem is. Run the hardware test procedure to see. It may well show you have a hardware fault with the drive. Start the computer from the cd by inserting the disk into the computer and restating while holding down the "c" key.

As a point of note, just because diskutilities cannot repair your disk doesn't mean that a re-install of the OS will cure your problem. The problem is with your disk or the way some files are organised on it (ie they have gotten corrupted), not your Operating System. The way to fix this may have to involve a re-fomatting of the disk which will result in you having to re-install the OS but it doesn't follow necessarily that this is the case. It could be that disk-repair software will do the trick and not require an OS re-install. The point is that this problem is not OS related but disk related. Solving the issues could result in you having to re-install all system and other software because you've had to re-format the disk but if the solution does not involve a re-format then no re-installation will be necessary.

DiskUtilities has its limitations in what it can do. To keep your disk healthy and rescue you when things go bad DiskWarrior from www.alsoft.com will do more. It is worth every penny and is highly recommended. Also check out techtool pro (www.micromat.com). This app has more features and is more complicated. Diskwarrior seems to be the best at the moment.

So in summary,
Try running the hardware test routine from the hardware test cd.

If you cannot perform a full re-format of the disk and installation of OS ie "erase and install" then you probably have a faulty disk requiring a return to the shop. Assuming your computer is still under warranty then it will probably be easier just to return the computer and let someone else sort it out for you!

You may wish to consider buying DiskWarrior to keep things healthy in the future and it may well sort out the problem you are currently having.

I hope this helps a bit. get back to me if you need anything clarifying or have further questions.

regards

Tom

thanks Tom your advice is spot on. Each time i've had to do a complete erase and install as when i've tried to do an archive and install It won't let me due to a faulty target volume on the hard disk. I think i will have to return it to apple as its under warrenty until feb 06.

Thanks again for your help, i'll give you good feedback.

Regards,

Tom
