While reinstalling OSX on my PC G5. I accidently erased my drive. Everything is gone and can't get songs back onto the itunes library.

Bought data recovery (as advised by APPLE CARE) before I found that I need an external drive.
Can I recover my files????? HELP SOMEONE PLEASE.
I find that calling into APPLE for help (with the paid for APPLE CARE) unfortunately is not very helpful.

Hi and welcome to macosx.com

I guess that Apple advised you to buy some software like DataRescue from Prosoft, which need an external drive for recovering file.

But with your accidental Erase&Install procedure, it will be a miracle..yes a miracle.. that OSX installation had not write data on the hard disk space used by your songs...and if this case, it will be too late.

I'm not sure at all that the recover tool will success, even if you buy/borrow an external drive.
If the amount of money of the paid&downloaded songs you've erased is higher than the price of an external drive -let's say around 80$-, I would try the operation. No, otherwise.
If it is only a patient "jukebox" problem, i.e reimporting all the songs from CDs you own, I would prefer to be patient and re-import all the songs.

Do not cry: I personnaly face such a situation with -only !- 200 songs I've forgot to backup before my G3 drive died. So, I play the jukebox to reimport all of them and I understand your despair

Regards
Philippe

OK,So let me get clear.
All of the data eraased, the final cut work, data, documents etc. is gone forever?

And for the itunes,I have it all on my ipod, but can't seem to transfer the songs back to the G5. Is itunes a one-way transfer?

Since, I should get an external drive,is it better to have (2) 512 or is 1Tb good to have.Is LaCie more reliable than Western Digital?

1-> Yes, if you have wiped the drive, everything is gone forever. So, without a backup....

2-> Yes; iTunes->iPod one way; the iPod is the exact image of your iTunes library...which is now empty
----> so DO NOT resync your iPod or it will be also cleaned. But instead, use some software to extract music form iPod to your Desktop (then re-import it into iTunes). Among others:
Podmanager (shareware): http://podmanager.brunoblondeau.com/
Senuti (freeware): http://www.fadingred.org/senuti/
(see: http://www.pure-mac.com/mp3.html)

3-> I have a LaCie d2 120G since 4 years with no problem at all; the mechanics is a little bit noisy but cumfortable
I a have a portable WD Passeport since 2 months, a pure pleasure ! (60G auto powred by my G5 USB2 port)
